Oh, and whilst I'm here, I think we need to create Category:Maps, and categorise all maps on the wiki onto it for easy maintenance.  Kirkburn talk contr 14:25, 10 February 2007 (EST)

Visible but unreachable places

Just wondering - is there an article on WoWWiki that lists noteworthy places that can be seen but are not reachable in gameplay? This would most notably include unreachable places visible from flight paths but may include places visible by other means. If there isn't one, would there be any interest in starting one? --Mwalimu 21:34, 16 February 2007 (EST)

I have been thinking of starting a similar article myself. However, mine would be more a list of all places reachable by Flying mount, where access is better left impossible, for now. However such an article would be rather cool aswell. ==Patrigan-Talk/Contr-SH (EU) 04:28, 17 February 2007 (EST)
"better left impossible"? If you can fly there, you can get there. I can't think of a time when a flying mount can't get somewhere in Outland. :S --Zealtalkcontrweb 05:10, 17 February 2007 (EST)
Flying mounts can't swim :P --Psyker7 07:03, 17 February 2007 (EST)
And being that there's not much water in Outland, and where there is, there is no inaccessable places, it's not an issue :p --Zealtalkcontrweb 07:14, 17 February 2007 (EST)
Patrigan: Places_To_Go_By_Flying (And it badly needs to be renamed). --Adys 05:17, 17 February 2007 (EST)
There are some places in the outlands that you can not fly over. Try going out to the black temple and try flying over the temple. There is an invisible wall around the temple that is actually curved out from the temple so the higher you go the farther back from the temple you will be pushed. -- DParvintalkcontr 09:00 AM 23 April 2007 (MDT)
There isn't a list afaik. I'm hoping you're not looking for guides or something of how to get to place you're not meant to, even though they're not exactly exploits, they aren't allowed by Blizzard, and thus that probably goes for here too. But sure, make up a list. --Zealtalkcontrweb 05:10, 17 February 2007 (EST)

Who ever suggested we were talking about Burning Crusade? I wasn't for sure... I was thinking about a list of places in AZeroth. Places like the east Tirisfall, where currently nothing, but a flat plains can be seen. Mwalimu most probably referred to places like the Dwarves vs the Dragon near Searing Gorge. The Dancing Trolls between Darkshore and Moonglade. Hyjal itself even (but that one ain't seeable from flightpaths. Simply every part of Azeroth which needs to be redone qo that we can have the dream come true of one day being able to use flying mounts in Azeroth. (Reading Comprehension my friends, not everyone is about Outlands these days :p) ==Patrigan-Talk/Contr-SH (EU) 11:12, 17 February 2007 (EST)

Yes, Azeroth for sure - My highest char is a mid-level who isn't powerful enough yet to explore many areas of Azeroth, much less Outlands or most of the instances. So there are a lot of flights paths I don't know yet, some I haven't used, and of the interesting looking places I've seen from the air I haven't tried to reach many of them and don't know if it's possible or not. As such, I'd suggest the format of the list allow for corrections in case a thought-to-be-unreachable place turns out to be reachable after all.
There are a couple of buildings and farmland terraces visible between Menethil Harbor and Ironforge that look unreachable. The seas outside the Deeprun Tram would qualify for the list. And there are a couple of areas visible on the approach to Stonetalon Peak that I couldn't find any way to get to, at least not directly from Stonetalon Peak. I can't rule out the possibility of an alternate exit from the Talon Den, or an obscure approach from Desolace or the sea, but I suspect those areas are unreachable. --Mwalimu 11:38, 17 February 2007 (EST)
I dare confirm they are unreachable. Checked w/ the wowmapview. The areas you see when travelling Auberdine-Theramore(and related ones) in Stonetalon are unreachable and "cave exits" are only decorative. Maybe to encourage players to search a secret, or a backdoors to give access to theese zones later. Currently the westernmost Stonetalon hasn't got any heightmap. ElfElunaAlina 21:15, 3 March 2007 (EST) The area seen en route to Stonetalon from Menethil is reachable from Stonetalon; however apon finding the one crag in the mountains that is climbable, you will learn that it is a glitch. There is nothing in the waterfall, orc hut, or stone structure. The only way out is via teleport or a jump into the ocean followed by a very very long swim until you reach a mountable shoreline. Some mysteries are best left mysteries.
How about make your comments clearer rather than insulting my ability to read which is fine pat? ¬_¬ Either way, i rfer you to what i said to Mwalimu, and also add that these things are not what is stopping flying mount use in Azeroth. Just make sure you're not disccuing how to get to these places, merely that they exist and where.
On a site note.. seriouslly.. will people learn to indent comments properly.. >_< --Zealtalkcontrweb 13:15, 17 February 2007 (EST)

Sorry Zeal, never wanted to sound insulting :p Ofcourse I would also never discuss how to reach those places (I can say that I have seen them thanks to a shaman ability >.>) I'm working on this list, so that I might get Blizzard to actually fix those zones and allow flying mounts in Azeroth. There's 2 fixes needed for that: 1. Currently unreachable places: be it FP Favor places, or just unfinished zones (this involves both places like Hyjal and places like west of Tirisfal) 2. Hardness bugs: Can't really find the right word, but the fact that some things allow you to fall through a roof (everyone has seen the Noggaholic movie where they fell through the roof to Thrall I presume?) It'll be hell of a work for blizz to fix that, but if they know what to fix, then perhaps... ==Patrigan-Talk/Contr-SH (EU) 04:23, 18 February 2007 (EST)
I guess it would identify as clipping bugs. Malusz 15:14, 28 April 2007 (EDT)
That would be known as a Collision bug. Clipping is just art passing through another piece of art (IE when you run through another player character or mob) or showing up in front of it when its supposed to be behind it. Collision is what stops you from going places you aren't supposed to go and keeps you from falling through the world. It would take a fair amount of work for the collision to be done up for the unfinished areas and to put caps on all the areas that Azeroth has, but it is definitely do-able. Etherstorm

There's categories for these types of places (at least the kind that show up on the maps): Category:Closed_zones. I don't think there's a list of the various small things you fly over (like the tent on the Stormwind->Ironforge flight path). --Bobson 23:50, 17 February 2007 (EST)

I didn't know about that category until just now, and I'd say it qualifies for what I had in mind, or at least close enough that it's not worth the trouble to create the list as I had originally suggested. Thanks for pointing that out. --Mwalimu 01:03, 18 February 2007 (EST)

Blizz has already stated that the reason there won't be flying mounts in Azeroth is because they would have to totally rescript and remap the WHOLE area, not just those small areas you see but can't get to. --Shik 00:52, 27 March 2007 (EDT)

I find that not true to be quite honest, because as you might, or might not know, flieng mounts acctualy just "swim" trough air. the only point is that they would need to set flight bounds, and "close up" holes in the ground at the places they didn't pay any atension to.
AKA blizzard thinks we are idiots. Yenea Whindlebolt 13:39, 20 April 2007 (EDT)
No, that in point of fact is NOT why. There are three primary reasons: 1) They would have to scour the map to find all the places that don't quite fit together, but don't matter currently, and make everything look nice and pretty and such. 2) There are tons of places open to expansion, and they do not want us to look at those areas ahead of time. 3) (and this is the important one) They've stated that they have no intention to allow flying mounts in Azeroth. Simple as that.
If you think about it, there's also a bunch of smaller reasons, like making the OL hover-ganking a reality for all levels (all levels to GET ganked, that is)
Deathtoll2001 17:16, 1 May 2007 (EDT)
A while ago (around E3 in 2006? perhaps?) in one of the interviews surrounding the development of BC one of the designers talked about the problems with flying mounts in the old world. As he explained it one of the primary problems was the way the world was built up while you were wandering around/exploring. Instead of having an entire world in computer memory (ready to render) the old world severely restricts the amount of world preloaded. This is fine while running around in a zone like Burning Steppes as it means your computer doesn't have to deal with what's happening in Searing Gorge, but wreaks havoc when players can jump across zones whenever and wherever they like. In Outlands they have coded this in a new way so the game is quicker to adapt to what you're doing. Add to that all the unfinished halfzones and whole zones (Hyjal, Gilneas etc etc) and you're looking at an immense amount of work.

tier 4

--Rocketboy 16:29, 20 February 2007 (EST) From the info i have received i understand that there are two different warrior sets: Battle, and Protection. What I'm Wondering is if you can have both? I'm somewhat confused how to achieve the battleset. Is it done by pvp or token turn in from boss drops?

For some classes, there are multiple Tier 4 sets. Warriors do have two sets: Warbringer Armor which is a tanking set and Warbringer Battlegear which is a DPS set. The pieces are obtained by turning in tokens that drop in Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, and (possibly) Magtheridon's Lair. You can have pieces from both sets, although each set has its own specific set bonuses. - ClydeJr 18:08, 20 February 2007 (EST)

Seeing completed old quests

Is there a macro or addon that shows which quests were already completed by a character (i.e. not in the quest log but that had been completed a while back)? Seems this should be possible since we get a message on other players when we have completed a quest. Couldn't a server request be written that brings back that information?

--Mikenowo 10:34, 23 February 2007 (EST)

I'm afraid without an addon tracking all the quests you do, there isnt a way to get that infomation from the default UI, it's all kept hidden in blizzard's servers. --Kaso 09:27, 17 March 2007 (EDT)

Fade in at login time

I notice that since installing the expansion I now have a 2 second or so 'fade in' of the login fields at wow login time when before they appeared right away. I've checked my settings but don't see anything that would cause this (compared with an old I had). Any ideas how to disable this annoying fade in? Also is there anywhere that explains all the entries in the file (I found a page here that show most of the possible entries but not what they all mean). --Mikenowo 10:49, 23 February 2007 (EST)

It's a keylogger scan that runs before letting your account and password fields appear, during the BC beta there was still a message for it but since the release it appears as a fade in. --Adys 11:08, 23 February 2007 (EST)

/who GM

From GM Island

  • During February and March 2007, players who perform a /who GM search will receive a list of GMs with <GM> tags and GMs on the GM Island.Confirmed to still work after patch 2.0.8

I have just tried to do this with v2.0.8.6403 (EU - enGB), and all I get is a list of players with gm in their name.

What is the source of this? Can anyone confirm it to work? --Stijnherreman 12:31, 24 February 2007 (EST)

I tried it in 2.0.7, didn't work then either. --Zealtalkcontrweb 12:35, 24 February 2007 (EST)
I tried it the night before the Patch of Druid Beating, and it worked, showing one person (a level 1 paladin) on GM island. Not sure what the point is, but it did it. It also showed about 10 other people, all with 'gm' in their name. --Azaram 03:34, 7 March 2007 (EST)
This worked for me today, <GM>Zrythos, level 60 warlock on GM island... Obviously it will only work if there are any online at the time. --Psyker7 02:12, 10 March 2007 (EST)
I've tried this several times and I'll only get people's names that include gm in it. Why would they have themselves seen that way anyway? If you try to whisper them it says to make a ticket. Colinstu  talk / cont 18:21, 30 April 2007 (EDT)
gm's that are serving tickets are not logged into the game, they use a different client to chat with players in game, so they must be doing something else on gm islend. -GardDog 00:39, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

every time I speak with a GM I run CensusPlus. When I look now under the listing of people without a guild the GMs appear at top of the list... meanwhile my list contains 10 GMs... hehe ;-) -Zghuk 03:49, 25 May 2007 (CEST)

List of alt chars

Is there an addon that allows you to get a list of all alts for a given main character (i.e. if you give one character name it will list all the other char names associated to that char on the persons id)

--Mikenowo 09:12, 25 February 2007 (EST)

Addons do not have access to that information from the game. Some exist that let you manually define what alt belongs to which person. However, this isn't the place for this stuff, please use the Blizzard forum or one of the addon sites. TeжubԎ Ҩ Ѡ 11:44, 25 February 2007 (EST)

are leatherworking items soulbound?

i am concidering making my feral/healer druid a leatherworker so i can mail stuff to my rogue. who is a herbologist/ skinner because when i learn poisons it will be cool not having to buy herbs for my poisons.

i was going to make my druid's other proffesion alchemy (as i have my rogue farming herbs and leather.) the only problem i can see is if the leatherworking items are soulbound, could someone tell me if they are.

i looked all over the leatherworker page but it didn 't say. can i have some help?

The mass majority of crafted equipment are not Bind on Pickup, so they do not bind the moment you make them. However, some items require a certain crafting skill to use, especially engineering items. The simple answer to your question is yes, you can do what you want, for the most part. TeжubԎ Ҩ Ѡ 11:32, 25 February 2007 (EST)
It's true that the general products of crafting skills are not BOP, the key exception to this is craft specializations, in the case of leatherworking, into Tribal, elemental and dragonscale leatherworking. All recipes learnt from the specialization are BOP and thus you should take the one best suited to your crafter. Jalben 01:32, 27 February 2007 (EST)
*cough* Not everthing there is BoP... TeжubԎ Ҩ Ѡ 02:08, 27 February 2007 (EST)
That page is slightly misleading. Things like Dragonscale Gauntlets and Blue Dragonscale Leggings no longer require the crafter to have the Dragonscale specialty. Any leathercrafter with high enough skill can learn them now. They really shouldn't be on Wowhead's Dragonscale page anymore. The only items that require the specialty to make are now BoP so only the crafter can wear them. It's the same with the blacksmithing specialties. Therefore you should pick your specialty based on what your character can use. If you're planning on having a feral/healing druid learn leatherworking, you're best choices are either Elemental Leatherworking for the [Primal Intent] set (Feral) or the Tribal Leatherworking for the [Windhawk Armor] set (Healing).- ClydeJr 17:44, 28 February 2007 (EST)

Easy cash

In wow one of the easiest ways to make cash for levels 24-29 is the wetlands. I have created a guide on how to make lots of money. Here it is(If you find anything unsatisfactory tell me) : If you are in menethil harbor exit. then go straight forward. follow the path. if you take a right farther forward you should see mottled raptors. start grinding here. not only will you get lots of xp you will also collect raptor tooths and raptor eggs. When you have about 20-40 teeth and 10-30 eggs go to ironforge.

here sell the teeth to a vendor and the eggs at the auction house. If you had 40 teeth and 30 eggs you could have earned up to 1.5 gold. Repeat this process 6-40 times a week. after about one week you should have earned 9-60.

60g in a week? That is not exactly what I consider "Easy Cash". My recommendation is to spend your week leveling, go to the outlands and earn 60g in twenty minutes.
The idea behind this idea is really a good one, though. Collect all those grey items, and sell them. Collect all those white items you have no use for, and sell them. I've often grouped with people who just looted the quest items, money, and green+ items, and left the rest for me to collect - and they can bring in a lot more money... --Bobson 16:55, 6 March 2007 (EST)

GOLD AND WOMEN WILL FLOCK TO YOU LIKE THE SALMON OF CAPISTRANO IF YOU READ THIS i used to pass on all the gray items. always seemed a waste of time. ive learned the error of my ways, though, especially human crafted grays, generally 1.5g and up. stacks of elemental mob gray items, for example, go for 2.5 a stack or so. ive made over 7.5K g since TBC came out (a quantifiable #, reg flyer 900, epic flyer 5000, epic for my alt 900, 100 for alts lvl 40, 100 for a friends level 40, and the 500 or so i have in bank now. it helped that i had my full R14 pvp set (*buffs fingernails* earned pre server, i might add) so i was able to DE just about ever quest reward. mat prices are insane. and i farmed several characters worth of scryer exalted rep items. also as a level 70, i can pretty much run straight to incendius, kill him and run out and reset without aggroing a single mob. thats 5 large brilliant shards per hour (instance cap is 5 per hour). thats 10g minimum pershard. ive done 20 runs in a day several times. and pre TBC, i would go to winterspring and farm eye of shadow, i would get about 3 every 2 days, quick 75-200 each, starting out around 200 and sliding down the closer it got to being obsolete. soooooo....long story longer, discard nothing, sell everything. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Eleganza (talkcontr).

/me climbs the Wall of Text and meows from the top. :-D Basically, I follow an old adventure game's philosophy; 'Crime pays, take everything '. If you can pick it up and have bag space, take it. If you find something better, toss the cheapest thing. Sell everything when you get back to town and bam, free money. Farming is incredibly boring, but I've made a couple of grand just by selling everything that isn't nailed down.

There are mods that will help with this; Autoprofit lets you sell everything grey at a vendor with one click, and Itemized Deductions will automatically tell you what's cheapest to drop. --Azaram 22:42, 3 April 2007 (EDT)

At lvl 33-36 there is a Croskilisk pit near the path that goes over the mountains between The Shimmering flats(thousand needles)and Tanaris... those mobs are worth about 7s average per kill, and if your rested give around 400+ exp (200+ not rested) and if you have skinning you can make some serious gold off of them. If greens drop you can easily double your profits

if you are level 70 and want money, dont quest, dont farm primals, instead, do this. Go to the caverns of time in tanaris and into the black morass (note, you have to have completed caverns of time: escape from durnholde keep to have access). Dont take a group with you and dont bother starting the event. Just kill the spiders. Each one has an almost 50% chance to drop a netherweb spider silk which is used in tailoring. On my server these sell around 10g each on the auction house but i have heard that on some servers they sell for up to 35g each.

Please sign your messages. Anyway, saying netherweb spider silk is worth 10g+ is totally wrong. More like 10g max. It's way too easy to farm for it to be worth that much. On my 65 priest I farmed 4 in like 10 min just where Allerian Stronghold path leads to the Bone Wastes in Terokkar. Primals of particular sorts are generally a better bet for value. Primal Water generally fetches around 20g, although it takes longer to farm. --Fandyllic (talk · contr) 3:01 PM PDT 1 June 2007

I'll give you a tip. Herbalism and Alchemy. Unless you just want to toss money away as your learning to play. Alchemy gives you lots of useful buffs as you go up in level, the best being Nature Protection potions. The tradeskills of leather crafting, jewelcrafting, engineer, and armorsmith, are all very expensive to raise. Sharlin
This is not the place to ask/answer such questions, but I have to disagree with Sharlin. Take two gathering skills. Skinning/Herbalism or Skinning/Mining is the easiest. The money you make will greatly outweigh anything you can get from any crafting skill until you get to at least level 50. --Mlucero 10:59, 8 March 2007 (EST)

Direct Damage?

I noticed that DD (Direct Damage) is used to describe a wide variety of spells...

I've been used to refering to spells that have a delivery time as 'bolts', whereas spells that instantly damage the target as 'DD' spells.

so, Death Coil would be an Instant Bolt, Frostbolt would be a Bolt, Smite a DD, and Earth Shock would be an Instant DD.

I dunno if anyone else have used DD this way, but i'm fairly certain it was lingua franca in DAoC.

--Poposhka 19:39, 15 March 2007 (EDT)

I think Bolt is the wrong word, although I would say it raises some ambiguity about Ranged Direct Damage and standard Direct Damage, since Ranged Direct Damage will only apply when that spell eventually reaches the target. I've now managed to confused myself :) <Kiltek> blah / spam 04:36, 16 March 2007 (EDT)
You're confusing yourself because you're trying to describe the whole spell mechanic in one descriptor... lets simplify shall we?
  • Damage type
    • Direct - Deals damage all at once
    • Over Time - Damage is spread out over a time frame after the spell has been cast
    • Channeled - Damage is dealt over time while the caster is channeling the spell
  • Casting type
    • Instant - Lands on the target the moment it is cast
    • Ranged - Must travel from the caster to the target before damage is dealt
  • Casting time
    • Normal - Player must cast for a certain amount of time before the spell is unleashed
    • Instant - Casts instantly
    • Channeled - Starts casting immediatly, but must maintain channeling to maintain effect
There are of course all different combinations of these types... some channeled spells are ranged (Arcane Missles) and some are instant (Volley and other AoEs) The real point of the damage types isn't really to describe the mechanics of how the spell gets to the target, but rather it's effect after it has been cast. I don't think most players are going to care if their cast is a "bolt" that must travel, because it's always going to do this once it's cast. Unless the mob dies after the spell has cast there's nothing to worry about, and you couldn't cancel the spell at that point anyway. TeжubԎ Ҩ Ѡ 06:48, 16 March 2007 (EDT)
I have to disagree. "Direct" refers to spell targeting. It's either 'directed at one specific enemy or an area effect. Damage type would be "instant"/"burst" I don't really have an english word for it now, or over time and channeled is an additional attribute, since in theory (though none usable by players) a spell could have a casttime and be channeled and be a dot, but also have no casttime be channeled and deal all the damage at once... though you may call the latter "charging" or somewhat. Maybe we should create a page with spell attributes... -watchout 08:26, 16 March 2007 (EDT)
I think Tekkub is right here. I'd say "direct damage" and "damage over time" simply refers to their mechanic. If you examine spells on thottbot, DD spells use "School Damage (X)", whereas DoTs use "periodic damage". Of course there are also mixtures available. Immolate is one of those, being a direct damage AND a damage over time spell. Mind Control and Eye of Kilrogg are exceptions as well, consisting of a cast time AND a channeling time. So far, on the wiki it is not mentioned whether its an instant or a bolt spell, I'd like to add that. Spell targeting would be "Single Target" or "Area of Effect". --bfx 07:05, 24 March 2007 (EDT)
Just to mention that IMO "Next Melee" should also go under the "Casting Time" category.. --FireFly 15:05, 2 April 2007 (EDT)

Just to toss another spoon in the pot, the druid maim says "Finishing move that causes damage and incapacitates the target. Any directly damaging attack will revive the target." Which means to me 'bleed effects do not break it, but any attack that does damage will break the stun'. You can rip and/or rake then maim, the bleeds tick and they stay stunned, but if you get behind and throw shred, they wake up right away. So I read 'direct damage' as 'damage right away' as opposed to 'damage over time'. A DD shot like freshly applied moonfire wakes them, a DD shot like wrath wakes them, a DD attack like mangle wakes them, but the previously ticking moonfire or bleed effect does not. I believe that's what they mean by the difference. --Azaram 06:03, 17 March 2007 (EDT)

When playing on my shaman I've noticed the grounding totem only seems to work on spells that travel, like fireball or shadowbolt, but does not seem to stop smite, mindflay, or other instant attacks. So

there may be a difference between the spell types.

Mindflay is a Channeled spell. So that isn't supposed to work on a GT. However, Smite is. I know for a fact that Fire Blast works against GTs. :)--Sky (t · c · w) 17:49, 2 April 2007 (EDT)

Model changing

Blizzard's EULA says I can't edit their game files, but what if I'm doing it for looks? I'm not doing this to move walls, or make nodes bigger, just change what a weapon looks like to another... is this safe? And how do they figure it out anyway? If I'm going to get banned, I'm copying back the backup file asap. I just changed it w/ a hex program. I just want my weapons look more cool >:( --Colinstu 00:40, 26 March 2007 (EDT)

Blizzard says don't change their files for any reason. They already have the Warden program that checks what else is running. They might have other things that check filesizes, date changed, checksums, other stuff. Just don't do it. - ClydeJr 01:01, 26 March 2007 (EDT)
this was bothering me and chnaged it back... lol --Colinstu 01:26, 26 March 2007 (EDT) PS, two thunderfurys did look sweet :P
Confirmed, Blizzard noted a long time ago that model changing for any reason is not allowed. It started to get out of hand where Addon Authors were releasing packages that allowed, in some ways, to change the environment. Albeit you want to change things for "looks" or otherwise, it's not allowed. Sorry :( <Kiltek> blah / spam 04:40, 26 March 2007 (EDT)
It is very illegal for this reason. You can see people better by changing them, etc. This is why it's illegal. It's bannable. It will be detected. MPQ files are hashed and easily verified for integrity. It's one of the most basic checks by Warden. --Shirik 11:29, 27 March 2007 (EDT)
P.S. If you really wanted to change those files, using a hex editor is possibly the worst way to do it :P --Shirik 11:29, 27 March 2007 (EDT)
The game allows for user-made files to "overwrite" files from the MPQs (internal file structure). Such mods as FishPing for partially deaf players is a great example. They removed the ability to use custom textures on player models because people were exploiting that in PvP. Whatever you do within their sandbox is allowed, whatever they don't like will eventually be disallowed. Boblo-WW talk contr 13:36, 1 May 2007 (EDT)
Watch what you're sating Boblo. Yes, the game might allow it, but hey, I think if I was a really good hacker I could say that the game also allows me to do those textures sizing. It's not because it's possible, that it's allowed and Blizzard has stated before, that you are not allowed to do that. Ofcourse the thing they did for the deaf will be untouched, but when some other group manages to abuse that thing for some exploit, they'll ban it. Don't think for a second however, that because you have a righteous cause, that you are in fact allowed to do it. In essence, every time you play with the files or use a patch or something that does it for you, blizzard is in fact allowed to permaban you. That's what the EULA says, that's what you have accepted. The banning and disallowing itself ofcourse happens within the boundaries of ethics. A man who kills an animal because it had gone mad and started attacking people, will be punished less harshly than a man who just killed the animal because it would give him a feeling of superiority. // Patrigan | Talk/ Contr \\ 16:42, 1 May 2007 (EDT)
There's not any real "playing" with files. There's an internal file structure which remains unchanged, the path to finding these files allows users to add their own stuff to use instead. When the developers find that this is being abused, they simply change the path to "internal only" to not allow it. Boblo-WW talk contr 16:59, 3 May 2007 (EDT)
on the other hand i have seen numbers GM responses saying that changing things for cosmetic purposes is generally ok, (some hunters changed their wolves to look like better wolves by swapping game files) it's a touchy subject but so long as it does not affect game play it's generally allowed. Question about + generic magic damage vs + specific magic tree damage

I apologize if this has been asked and answered before but I looked and didn't see an answer anywhere.

Is there any difference between an item that does +20 spell damage as opposed to +20 frost damage? I know that the latter is obviously limited to boosting frost but will the +20 spell damage give the same boost to frost (as well as fire, arcane, etc.) that +20 frost damage will? If so, why is there any item that limits damage to a specific magic branch as opposed to the generic +spell damage?

Thanks in advance!

--Zippity 01:38, 28 March 2007 (EDT)

No there's no difference in the "boost" it will give you, on a top level at least. Each spell a class has benefits from a percentage of the +damage (or +healing) you might have; it's never 100%. This can also be changed through talents.
Limiting items to certain types of damage is about itemisation balancing; it's simply to stop people being able to completely overgear themselves. Take a mage for example, they have Fire, Frost and Arcane; now imagine how over powered that would be if that mage could wear the same robe to boost the power of his Fire spells, even though he's actually Frost specc. It's all about balance! <Kiltek> blah / spam 04:51, 28 March 2007 (EDT)
I think that when you have a boost to a specific type of damage, the bonus is often higher that the generic damage type. Take a look at Slavehandler Wristguards. The Invoker and Sorcerer versions have a +15 generic spell damage boost. The "Wrath" versions have a bonus +35 to a specific damage type. Using a Wrath item is best if most of your spells are from a specific school. For example, I found the Shadow Wrath version of this and gave it to my Affliction warlock. Almost all her spells are shadow based. While her Immolate spell didn't get a boost, I didn't use it that often. - ClydeJr 12:19, 28 March 2007 (EDT)
Following that logic, just look at all the quest rewards which give items with +X damage and healing or +Y healing, where Y > X. Since healing's a limited type of magic, it's balanced to boost it more than it would be to boost everything. --Bobson 05:25, 8 April 2007 (EDT)

neutral faction

Dont you think that there should be a neutral faction that way you can decide what towns you want to help out and what towns you want to gain rep for. It would just make the game that much better, imagine playing as a blood elf and deciding that you want help out Stormwind or Iron forge or even for some strange reason Darnassus --Rufficuss 02:00, 28 March 2007 (EDT)

World of Warcraft is a game very much based on Lore. Doing something like this would go against that lore. In all games, there is always 2 opposing sides (or more) and as such it creates the competition, seen in both PvP and PvE that we see today. Start to blend those edges and the game is going to lose its kick and interest. So no, it would in no way be a good idea. <Kiltek> blah / spam 04:47, 28 March 2007 (EDT)
There are neutral factions which you can choose which ones to help out - there's the Goblins, the Aldor/Scryer choice, and the choice of Centaur tribes in Desolace. However, for many reasons, both lore- and gameplay-based, there isn't and will never be a way to help the opposing faction. If you've been playing long enough, you may remember that you used to be able to see your rep with the opposing faction, and that it started at Hated, could never go up, and was permanently "at war" (at least, that's how I remember it being). That's been removed, since it was quite pointless to have. --Bobson 05:23, 8 April 2007 (EDT)

What patches were armor released?

I can see that T1 and T2 have been having armor and stat change way back, but when were they released? Can I also get when T0, .0, ZG, T3, PvP epic and rare, etc was releases? Thanks. --Colinstu 00:39, 29 March 2007 (EDT)

Sure, but you'll be finding it yourself :) Check out Patches then just look through each of the patch notes to find out. Armor is implemented into the game on the release of the dungeon in which they drop. However, Tier Sets are generally already in the game files before they a formally released. <Kiltek> blah / spam 04:54, 29 March 2007 (EDT)
I know for certain that both T1 and T2 were released with version 1.0 with the Molten Core. The majority of T2 was removed during a subsequent patch, in wait for BWL.--Sky (t · c · w) 03:00, 2 April 2007 (EDT)

It's possible that you just aren't patched up the current version, which is why it's a different size. As long as it plays, don't worry about it. If it gives you an error, quote the error when you're having a problem. If it plays but has a specific problem (such as video X is corrupted), check the WoW support forums. --Bobson 05:20, 8 April 2007 (EDT)

Gaining rep

What is the best way to gain rep with Orgrimaar?

I have done lots of quests and am revered but really want the wolf mount, where should I be questing?

--Tobia 15:46, 29 March 2007 (EDT)

You want to do as many quests where the quest-giver is an orc, even old level 1 quests. I believe all quests give full rep bonus, even if you don't get an experience. If you've done all the quests you can, then your next best bet is to turn in cloth to the Cloth Quartermaster in Orgrimmar. Her name is Rashona Straglash and I believe she can be found next to the Tailor trainers so you can ask a guard for directions. She'll first give you a turn in 60 wool, then 60 silk, then 60 mageweave, then finally a repeatable quest to turn in 60 runecloth.
I am not sure if this has changed in all places or if it has always done it, but I know when I go to turn in runecloth for the repeatable part, I only turn in 20 at a time. I think the first time turn ins give 200 or 250 rep, and the repeat turn ins give 75. DParvintalkcontr 12:14, 23 April 2007 (MDT)
Another possible solution (if you are level 60+) is to get Exalted status in the Alterac Valley battleground and purchase one of their white wolves for 50 AV Marks of Honor. - ClydeJr 17:31, 29 March 2007 (EDT)
Also doing Alterac Valley and turning in items there will give you rep with Orgrimmar I believe. I have not done AV with horde, but I know I got exalted with Ironforge by doing a lot of AV turn ins. Once you get to Exalted with the primary faction (Ironforge or Orgrimmar) then the faction gets split to the other four factions on your side. So when I got my faction with Ironforge all the way to the top of exalted, the faction went to Stormwind, Gnomeregan, Exodar and Darnassus. DParvintalkcontr 12:14, 23 April 2007 (MDT)

Karazhan video request

I use to have a two part video that was available for download from some guild - but I deleted it and I want to watch it again. I remember that the guild was European(French?), was horde, and used Sony Vegas for editing the movie. The video was pretty high quality, nice editing too. Silvermoon City Reputation?

Alright, so... I've been informed that once you complete all the quests in the Eversong Woods and The Ghostlands, there are absolutely 100% no more quests there(unless you're a Paladin) until you hit Level 60? As such, I'd like to know if it's physically possible to get Exaulted with Silvermoon City as a non-Blood Elf race. If so, how? I know you can repeatedly turn in cloth to the Cloth Quartermaster in The Bazaar of Silvermoon City, but other than that...? ~ Doc Lithius (U)(T)(C) 13:01, 4 April 2007 (EDT)

Once you get completely exalted with orgimmar, I think you can get rep to all horde factions, via turn ins of stuff in Alterac valley. --Colinstu 16:11, 4 April 2007 (EDT)
You don't have to be exalted with Orgrimmar, you just have to be in the instance to receive the rep from turn-ins. I must say, it will take quite a few of turn ins however. :)--Sky (t · c · w) 02:22, 5 April 2007 (EDT)
There are other quests scattered around which give SC rep. There's at least one questgiver in Freewind Post, for instance. In general, you get to exalted with Silvermoon the same way you get to exalted with any other major city - lots of quests at every level, and then repeatable rep turnins. The only thing special about this one is that any general Horde rep gained before BC doesn't count. --Bobson 05:16, 8 April 2007 (EDT)

That's not a problem, it was the intent. It's a small task to list yourself as LFG to be able to get at the channel. Some of us find the LFG system very useful, except the lack of people using it because they don't like the auto-grouper's logic. Un-check auto-join, list yourself, everyone is happy. --Pookiebear 16:54, 23 April 2007 (EDT)

I would think so since every class has its own special attributes, as warriors have tons of health, and rogues have lots of agility, etc, so yeah, i would think as they level, they get special attributes for that class.

--Morgisakim 22:30, 23 April 2007 (EDT)

Ok, then comes 2nd question... within each class, do the attributes vary per level based on race. Or does race have any effect on it at all, other than starting attributes?

A dragonflight in WoW is all the dragons of one of the five colors. Yes, they tend to function as one faction under their respective Aspect. There are also artificial dragonflights like the Nether ones. ;) --User:Sandwichman2448/Sig 17:38, 27 April 2007 (EDT)

Annoyed voices

I noticed not too long ago that Blizz actually included annoyed voices for when you click on a NPC too much. I'm pretty sure I remember trying that back when I first got the game (patch 1.2), and not finding any - anyone know when they were added (or did I just miss them originally)? Also, has anyone put a list of them all on the wiki anywhere? If not, I'll start one. --Bobson 12:47, 27 April 2007 (EDT)

calculator for WoW

Well i've been searching the web on how to make a calculator like 2+2*(5+2(5^2)2) type of problems. But i couldnt find a darn thing on how. Could someone please help me out.

-thanks —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Omesious (talkcontr).

Well, the quick and dirty way if you're not doing anything too complex or too often, is:
/script ChatFrame1:AddMessage(2+2*(5+2*(5^2)*2))
Other than that, check the usual addon websites.
Also, please remember to sign your posts in talk pages, I've done it for you this time. --Karrion 19:16, 29 April 2007 (EDT)

yeah i have searched throughout many addon websites for a calculator but they are all outdated. someone in an old guild made one but he is too stubborn to tel me out. any ways i will be using it alot so after you do the lil script thing to use the calculator you do someting like this /calc 2+2+2+2 for an example. --Omesious 21:51, 29 April 2007 (EDT)

If you happen to have any addons that use AceConsole, you can use /print to do the same thing (and more) --Karrion 22:12, 29 April 2007 (EDT)

macro question...

is it possible to make a macro loop? i know just enough about programming to be dangerous to myself lol...

basically i want to make a macro (not an add-on) that will check my pos and update me when it changes...something like this (but i know i'm cross-breeding programming languages):

/script if GetPlayerMapPosition("player") = px,py then

exit script

/script px,py=GetPlayerMapPosition("player")

/script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage(format("[ %s ] %i , %i",GetZoneText(),px*100,py*100));

--Devahl 22:00, 29 April 2007 (EDT)

No, that's not possible in a macro (and it if was, it would probably lock up your interface). You could only do that by using an addon which catches the OnUpdate of a frame. --Karrion 22:17, 29 April 2007 (EDT)

best professions to make money while levelling

would skinning/herb, skinning/mining or herb/mning if you switch what you track every so often, which is best?

oh and what professions are best for a rogue? (my main) baring in mind my alts who could farm for me. my alts are a druid, a mage and a warrior. what would be best for my alts?

Cweetiepie 11:25, 30 April 2007 (EDT)

Skinning/mining is generally accepted to be the best way to make money, but skinning/herbalism works too. Don't try herb/mining.
Rogues gain the most benefit from alchemy (lots of nice potions) or leatherworking (make their own armor). Maybe jewelcrafting too - I don't know much about what it can make. Druids are the same, mages either alchemy, tailoring, or jewelcrafting, and warriors either alchemy, blacksmithing, or engineering. Of all those, only blacksmithing or alchemy have the potential to make you real money while leveling, assuming you don't buy materials in bulk from the AH. --Bobson 12:40, 30 April 2007 (EDT)

Don't ever pick two professions that give you a tracking icon to find the nodes, like mining and herbing. You can only have one icon at a time and I think you get what I mean.

I'll suggest to atleast pick skinning as it is pretty easy to level up 'cause you got to kill these things for quests anyway, all you have to do is right click again for more money. My 2 cents Colinstu  talk / cont 18:16, 30 April 2007 (EDT)

I recommend blacksmithing and enchanting for serious rogues. Here's a guide to get BS for your Drakefist. I also agree with the above posts that herbalism and mining are not compatable. Blacksmithing without taking mining isn't feasible unless you have a huge amount of gold, or alts feeding you mats (in which case, you do have mining). --Bobson 18:36, 1 May 2007 (EDT)

Forced Positions for end game

Ok, ive noticed in end game people are forced to be the things they dont wanna do, such as a paladin has to be a healer, when he/she is protection speced, or rogues are forced to go combat to do dps, and warriors are supposed to be tanking spec, and i think that is just wrong. for one, if someone picked a class and they want to play that role with that class, by all means let them, dont ignore them because the paladin is protection speced, or the warrior is fury, because they are forced to play roles they dont want to play. its wrong! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Iownyou1230 (talkcontr).

List of Quests Done?

I have wondered for some time after reaching 70 whether there is a mod or otherwise that would give me a list of quests I have completed on my character, so I can figure out which quests I have yet to do, while reading through the tons of quests in the game. Anyone know of anything applicable?

The closest thing you'll get to a "free powerlevelling guide," as far as I can tell, is maybe this FAQ at GameFAQs... But that's a bit of a far cry from things like Joana's Powerlevelling Guide, which is not free.

--Armorica 17:12, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

You could get one of the various bar mods out there like Bartender3, Bongos, or TrinityBars that will let you put extra bars on your screen. That way there's less switching bars back and forth.
Another thing you could use use macros to put more than one spell on a button. For example, you could create a macro like:
/cast [modifier:shift] Howl of Terror, Fear
and put it on a button. Then if you press/click it with the shift button pressed, you cast Howl of Terror. If you don't have shift pressed, it casts Fear. You can also use alt and ctrl as your modifier as well.
One final thing is as a warlock, you often cast the same bunch of DoT spells in sequence. You can take advantage of the /castsequence command for this. Create a macro like:
/castsequence reset=combat/target Corruption, Immolate, Curse of Agony
and put it on a button. If you have an enemy targetted and press the button, you'll cast Corruption. If you click it again, it will cast Immolate. If you click it again, it will cast CoA. If you click it again, it will go back to the beginning and cast Corruption again. If you switch targets or leave combat, the sequence will automatically reset and you'll cast Corruption the next time you click.
See HOWTO: Make a Macro for more examples. - ClydeJr - talk - contrib 19:44, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Warlock Pet Mana Regen

I have yet to see any publicized information regarding warlock pets' mana regen formulas. It would be nice to see what each pet's mana per tick per point of spirit is, as such would be especially useful for Dark Pact spec'd warlocks active demon decisions. Even if having the imp out is always the best choice, assuming you're just using it as a mana battery, this kind of information would still be useful, and, as it stands, there's clearly more than just "in-game applicable" data on WoWWiki. For starters, I know the tooltip for Spirit in the "Pet" character window tab displays how much it increases by. How about confirming this rarely-examined rate (per pet) and figuring out whether it scales normally/follows any other common patterns?

Hunter builds for grinding

I have three questions for you seasoned vets.

  1. Is solo play viable at level 60+ or is it pretty much all group work?
  2. Is a Survival build optimal for the level grind up to 70?
  3. Is a Screech Tank going to scale very well?

I have seen a lot of suggestions for Beast Mastery builds for the level grind and I am currently lightly BM spec'd with the rest in Survival. I have found that long term grinding without breaks is possible if you melee a lot, with points in Resourcefulness. Although you lack the damage spikes that Marksmanship can produce, with the use of flame traps you can up your DPS to a rate not far off your ranged damage and not have to worry about pulling agro or resting to regain mana (the big time killer). Am I missing a trick here?

I use the term Screech Tank to describe my current Carrion Bird pet, Its only active abilities are growl and screech and it can out agro an identical level warrior (50 atm). Should I switch to a more aggressive skilled pet or use its massive agro generation to do more DPS myself? At the moment it growls and lets off about 6 screeches in under 10 seconds. Will this still be as effective as I level?

Edit: Nevermind, I had a good browse of the elitist jerks forums and found plenty of information. Thanks anyway.
