Whisper Gulch

Whisper Gulch

Howling Fjord concept

Whisper Gulch concept art

The Whisper Gulch is found in the Howling Fjord, to the north of Westguard Keep.

It is an eerie place that from above looks like a narrow crack in the land, overgrown with tilting trees. Inside is a chasm crisscrossed with wooden bridges, a good number of them broken and hanging limp. Mine entrances dot the canyon walls. The wind that whistles through the gulch brings sibilant whispers to the ear.[1]

The Deranged Explorers here are indicative of an unknown force where they have been working. They appear to be suffering the same affliction as the prisoners in the Saronite Mines in Icecrown.

History[]

During the war against the Lich King, some Explorers' League dwarves came here. The ones who stayed to explore were driven mad by the ore they found here—saronite, the crystallized black blood of Yogg-Saron and the source of whispering—and the sound of their raving echoes ceaselessly.[1]

The dwarves took most of our mules and equipment with them, and Explorer Abigail wanted them back, so she sent Alliance adventurers to get them.[2] Sapper Steelring was interested in ore and gems from the gulch, but as soon as adventurers brought him the ore and warned him, he only accepted the gems.[3] The maddened explorers in the gulch were led by Squeeg Idolhunter who unfortunately became a target of Westguard Keep.[4]

A Forsaken caravan passed through the area, and the mad dwarves attacked it. Apothecary Malthus suspected their beer contributed to their insanity, and had it brought to him.[5] The Forsaken also sent Horde adventurers to kill the dwarves in the gulch and collect their brains.[6]

After the war against the Jailer, the brothers Bronzebeards came here, and Brann recognized some of the gibbering madmen as former members of the League, which upset him deeply.[1]
