Migration question

Do you plan to stay with WoWWiki despite the migration to Wowpedia? They're apparently desperate for help around here since all of the active editors have left Wikia. I'm not sure what point there is to staying, but I thought I'd ask since you seem to be the only active user left. Shaponik (talk) 03:22, December 3, 2010 (UTC)

I do indeed tend to stay here as long as I am needed and as long as the community - whether the small one there is now or the potential one in the future - wants me.Raylan13@fandom (talk) 03:48, December 3, 2010 (UTC)
Oh, you're a Wikia staff member. I feel a little silly. I was looking for the mythical genuine WoWWiki holdovers. Sorry about that. Anyway, good luck keeping up. :) Shaponik (talk) 04:15, December 3, 2010 (UTC)

Regarding the notion that you "don't see what you are referring to" on Forum:WoWWiki's new location - I think he was talking about I am not Bellocois but have been talking with him off-wiki about this matter. Can you tell me with a straight face that there are ten (or even more than the one or two I've seen who basically wanted to protest against Curse but weren't going to be contributing substantially to WoWWiki) users not affiliated with Wikia who know about the new site but are staying here to contribute to the encyclopedia? Even Deadlykris agreed with that. Shaponik (talk) 18:11, December 4, 2010 (UTC)

I have undone your removal of a legitimate message as well. If User:KaurosWoW informs one of us that he knows about Wowpedia and wants to continue creating duplicate articles here, I'm fine with that. But I am not going to waste people's time. Shaponik (talk) 18:16, December 4, 2010 (UTC)

Are you here to contribute to wowwiki? I notice the only edits you have made are to the forum thread concerning wowpedia. If you are not interested in contributing to this site, then you are indeed 'wasting people's time'. Leaving messages on user's talk pages was evidently already brought up before in other discussions and people were subsequently asked not to advertise about wowpedia on people's talk pages. My assumption is that this is a policy that is still in effect, and I will enforce it. If a user here is contributing, let them contribute. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 23:15, December 4, 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I was unaware of this. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 17:36, December 4, 2010 (UTC)

Wikia contractor?

How much do they pay for this? I'm not trying to flame you. You've got me wondering now that I read . Astranath (talk) 22:51, December 7, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for passing on my suggestions

I've been trying to get JoePlay to respond on Community, but he seems to be ignoring me. As far as WoWWiki goes, I could see why Wikia might be ambivalent with working with me, because I never hestitate to criticize Wikia, but ignoring me is a bit immature.

I am curious, though, why someone made me a bureaucrat without telling me or having it appear in the logs. I'll have to think about whether I want to keep that status, because it might damage my credibility at Wowpedia. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 4:18 PM PST 7 Dec 2010

Not a problem at all. I appreciated seeing your ideas and will do what is in my power to implement those that I can. As for your Bureaucrat status, the User Rights log connected to your profile shows that you've been at that status since November 5, 2009, and the person that switched you from the Bureaucrats, Patrollers and Administrators to Bureaucrats was you. I don't know that any changes would be hidden from me, so I can only assume that you forgot? I'm limited by what is shown in that log, though can certainly do some digging for more information or even change your status if you'd like. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 00:26, December 8, 2010 (UTC)
That is so strange. I swear my user rights got taken away at some point. Otherwise I would have done alot more. Well, I guess I will start looking for some users to make admins. I won't say I will be that bureaucrat that I mentioned in my suggestions, but I can work toward it. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 11:31 PM PST 7 Dec 2010

Why did you revert my notices on user talk pages about Wowpedia? I'd at least expect an explanation on my user talk page why you reverted it. --Havenstrom (talk) 09:19, December 8, 2010 (UTC)

Policy has been handed down that editors should not post such messages to user talk pages; the reason I said nothing at this point is that I am making a general announcement tomorrow (I guess later today, actually) on the forums. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 09:22, December 8, 2010 (UTC)
Where is this policy at? I've seen no changes to the policy pages within the last 2 months.
Just out of curiousity: how will (non-)editors be notified of this? --Havenstrom (talk) 09:29, December 8, 2010 (UTC)
It's really already in the guidelines: "The practice of "spamming" — posting similar messages to more than a few users' talk pages, often for the purpose of soliciting a certain action — is discouraged. (Negated in the case of welcoming new users and the like)." It could also be argued that posting such messages defeats the purpose of and disrupts the continued operation of the wiki, which is some other policy somewhere. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 09:37, December 8, 2010 (UTC) (Edit: I'm going to bed now; just wanted to let you know I wasn't ignoring you if you posted back.)
Sure, but you haven't replied to my second question. --Havenstrom (talk) 09:44, December 8, 2010 (UTC)

User: Havenstrom's talk page

  1. You had no right to revert the edit I made to User:Havenstrom's user page. I didn't state the 'competing site' by name, and didn't state anything untrue. I also didn't break any policy rules with my post.
  2. He wanted an answer if non-editors would be told about the competing site, which is what I posted since you couldn't be bothered to. Reverting edits which even elude to another site looks bad on Wikia, especially when the edit had nothing to do with you in the first place. Its nice that you're a Wikia helper and editing wowwiki, but this isn't communist Russia and you don't get to steamroll over everyone and the policies already in place just because you feel like it. Resa1983 (talk) 00:08, December 9, 2010 (UTC)
Your post was not only inflammatory to me, but derogatory to the site. Please refrain from posting in such a manner. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 00:12, December 9, 2010 (UTC)
Better? [1] Resa1983 (talk) 00:35, December 9, 2010 (UTC)
Much. Thank you very much. I'm in the process of getting the welcome template changed to hopefully link to the forum threads; I should note that the policies in the thread are not new, however - only the penalties are, and those likely are only for the short-term. Again, thank you. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 00:38, December 9, 2010 (UTC)
"Derogatory to the site"? I wasn't aware that the site has feelings. Also, that's an amusing interpretation of WW:DE on the forum post. Are Wikia staff aware why that policy got implemented in the first place? --Kaydeethree (talk) 02:45, December 9, 2010 (UTC)

Regarding Forum:Regarding Policies

Are you applying these amendments to existing policy as an admin of WoWWiki or an employee of Wikia? This post, while well-intentioned seems to be dictated rather than agreed upon.

Have you read WoWWiki:Policy status phases? I suggest you do. Tell me if it makes you rethink any of your recent actions. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 7:26 PM PST 8 Dec 2010

The policies haven't been changed, just the consequences. That being said, what I posted was not something that I unilaterally decided and, like I've said, this is a short-term thing. I can have someone else come in and explain things, if that would help. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 03:31, December 9, 2010 (UTC)
Yes, please. Why are Wikia staff throwing you under the bus? If you did not decide unilaterally, why post something that gives everyone the impression that it is unilateral? Why all the secrecy? Wikia's lack of transparency is part of the reason people look at recent actions with great skepticism.
I'm am trying hard not to directly contradict many things you post. Does Wikia want to work with me or against me? A united front is not being presented at all. Even Deadlykris is now beginning to publicly question some of Wikia's actions and reasoning. The lack of communication and cooperation is very discouraging. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 1:15 PM PST 9 Dec 2010
Fandy, why do you think we moved? This is what the admin staff was working with for a long time. --PcjGamepedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!

At the end of the day, all I can do is explain my own actions, Fandyllic, and not the actions of others. I, too, would like to work together. Perhaps this is the best time to nail down exactly how our relationship should work--I'm still getting used to this 'non-hierarchical hierarchy' and have certainly stumbled. I'm glad you point it out when I do, because it only makes me a better asset for this wiki in the long run. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 21:40, December 9, 2010 (UTC)

Forum:Tightening Penalties: Proposal to be rejected

Sorry Raylan13, but unless Wikia or you have some compelling objections, Forum:Tightening Penalties: Proposal is going to be rejected on Monday (20-Dec-2010). By the current process it has lost soundly. I think if you were to re-propose some of the milder parts of the proposal in separate pieces, some would pass, but altogether... no. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 6:30 PM PST 18 Dec 2010

Actually, I have no issues with just leaving things as is. The community made some good comments in there, and I don't see any reason currently to pursue the matter further. At the very least it opened my eyes to the proposition and voting process, which was invaluable to me. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 17:01, December 19, 2010 (UTC)

Good resource for subzone listing

Just FYI, DB MMO-Champion (aka Sigrie) lists subzones for zones, if you ever need to know that. For example, Twilight Highlands has a big list of subzones. Wowhead doesn't have these lists, so it's kind of nice. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 6:43 PM PST 27 Dec 2010

Thanks for the link. I will definitely be using it. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 16:10, December 28, 2010 (UTC)

Are you finished with most zone updates?

I noticed you're making additions and changes to subzones. I would focus on finishing all the major zone updates before worrying about specific subzones. If you're done with the zones, then nevermind. Also, I would focus on contested subzones over faction dominated ones. Don't focus too much on the Alliance subzones, they are more likely to get other user updates. Horde zones and subzones tend to be more neglected. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 4:23 PM PST 7 Jan 2011

What I'm doing right now is zone--->subzones (alli & horde)--->npcs--->quests, then moving on to the next zone. I was originally going to do each group separately, but the way I'm taking notes from the game it's just easier and quicker overall for me to do it this way. If it ends up that I'm not hitting the main zones quickly enough, though, I may well end up going back to my original schedule. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 02:21, January 8, 2011 (UTC)

MediaWiki upgrade to 1.16.1...

Could you please update WoWWiki:Upgrades with any info you know about the MediaWiki 1.16.1 upgrade. Also, please change MediaWiki:Community-corner and MediaWiki:Communitymessages-notice-msg to notify users of upcoming slowdowns or other known issues. Having things randomly get slow and getting message about not being able to save changes is not very friendly if we can be otherwise warned about it. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 3:18 PM PST 20 Jan 2011

I'll pass this up to someone who knows more about what's happening.
I've been told that the hiccups over the past few days had to do with SMW. So far as I know, those changes have been rolled back until they can figure out the problem. 1.16.1 hasn't been implemented here yet, but hopefully an ETA will be coming so a heads-up can be given to users. Once we've got that, we can update those pages. It likely won't be for a little while yet, so if an ETA isn't given by Monday I'll do some digging and see what I can come up with. Something else

Hi Raylan13. It was pointed out to me by a friend I'm showing up as "Demoted" on WoWWiki:Administrators. I'm guessing that's Fandyllic childishly seeking some kind of revenge or something. In any case, I was revoked my admin rights by my own request and belong in the first "By request" listing.

While I'm still logged in there, I'd like my userpage blanked out and/or deleted. It's been broken since ages with the new layouts anyway, but for some reason it's still protected and I can't touch it. Cheers Adys 00:26, February 7, 2011 (UTC)

Fandyllic was reworking the admin page to reflect how things currently stand; though I can't speak directly for him, I'm positive no ill will was intended. As I can see your admin capabilities were removed by your request as you say, I'll go ahead and make that change to the admin page, provided Fandyllic hasn't seen this message himself. I'll also unprotect your page so you can blank it out/delete it. My apologies, and please let me know if there's any other way I can help. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 01:13, February 7, 2011 (UTC)
Thanks Raylan. Adys 01:46, February 7, 2011 (UTC)
He was demoted. I'm not going to let him re-write history. Here's the log. The reason he got demoted was this among other things. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 14 Feb 2011 8:08 PM Pacific
Ah - I saw the log and thought "basically requested it" meant he had asked to be demoted, not that he had done something to deserve demotion. I'm not entirely clear on the details, but you were obviously here long before me. I'll forward him to you if there are any questions about the matter. On a (slightly) unrelated note, shall we make our new admins official or should we wait a little longer to promote them? Raylan13@fandom (talk) 18:19, February 15, 2011 (UTC)

Promoting admins

Let me send out another MediaWiki:Community-corner update. I want to get at least a few comments from the community before we promote anyone. If you want, you can ask Bubsy87 and Servian if they want to be made moderators in the meantime. I'm perfectly okay with that. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 21 Feb 2011 10:53 AM Pacific

Sounds good to me. I'll send them a message on their talk pages. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 19:10, February 21, 2011 (UTC)

Polls feature update!

Good evening!

We've just enabled an upgraded version of polls here :) (Feign surprise)

It's separate to the old <poll> extension (which will continue to exist for some time), and works a little differently. Since the rich text editor isn't enabled here, you can use Special:CreatePoll to create them. Polls themselves even have their own pages, and are included on pages like templates: {{Poll:Pagename}}

If you or your users have any issues or thoughts about it, please don't hesitate to let me know - user talk page, Skype, Special:Contact all work. As you're essentially getting an early preview of the feature, you can announce (or not) it to the users as you desire. (Also posting this to Fandy). Kirkburn  talk  contr 19:49, February 23, 2011 (UTC)

Lets promote Bubsy87 and Servian...

Well, it looks like we've waited long enough for comments from other members of the community and they either don't care to comment, are too shy, or don't have any disagreements. It's been about a week since I sent the announcement requesting comment on admin nominations.

If you want to wait longer for comments, I'm fine with that also. We can ask Bubsy87 and Servian what they want for their description on the WoWWiki:Administrators page in anticipation of their promotion, even if we want to wait. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 3 Mar 2011 1:14 PM Pacific

Sounds good to me. I agree that we've waited long enough for any naysayers or otherwise to voice their opinions. I'll bump them to admin if you want to leave a message on their pages about what descriptions they want. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 21:25, March 3, 2011 (UTC)
Okay. Sounds good. I'll announce their promotions tomorrow. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 3 Mar 2011 5:44 PM Pacific

Not a problem. Glad I could make things clearer. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 00:55, March 7, 2011 (UTC)

We need to change the focus of our updates

I was exchanging messages with Grynd, the primary admin at WoW Answers and he was upset that I switched the link templates from pointing to Wowpedia back to WoWWiki. I tried to explain to him that WoWWiki was comparable, but from his perspective, we're not. From the examples he gave me, I tend to agree with him.

Here's the problem. Alot of our work is focused on replicating information that is already easily accessible at places like Wowhead. We need to focus on information that cannot be easily replicated at a DB. This means pages that synthesize info from DBs or come from empirical observations or research in-game.

Here are some example pages of comparison between us and Wowpedia that Grynd showed me:

As you can see our pages are pretty bad, if not terrible.

This sort of comes around to my previous concern about updated info on old content and for low level areas. While important, it really isn't what most of our users are probably looking for.

I wanted to run this stuff by you before I brought in Bubsy87 and Servian. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10 Mar 2011 6:42 PM Pacific

Grynd is female. Her name is Sarah. That is all. Rappy 05:40, March 11, 2011 (UTC)
Special:Mostvisitedpages/latest should give you an idea what should be updated. Which is mainly class builds, boss tactics and macros Servian (talk) 12:49, March 12, 2011 (UTC)
Raylan13, if you have any better user activity data from inside the friendly confines of Wikia. It would be appreciated. You could put it in a blog post or on the forums. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 13 Mar 2011 8:33 PM Pacific
Not a problem. I'll see if they have anything above and beyond the page that Servian pointed out. I'll post here if it isn't anything spectacular or identical to what we have. If it's a better list, though, I'll throw it into a forum post. Get back to you by the end of the day at the latest.
Turns out what they have access to is identical to what that page lists, so we can go by that. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 22:35, March 14, 2011 (UTC)
Looks like most of your recent focus has been on Cataclysm zones. That probably doesn't need to change. I'll start looking at latest most visited pages. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 15 Mar 2011 8:06 PM Pacific

Reason for removing refs?

Just curious about why you removed the ref here:

I checked the RPG book and it is correct. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 11 Mar 2011 7:31 PM Pacific

It looked like the refs were the same as the ones cited in the 'source' section of the box, which was the Lands of Conflict. Looks like it should read p.47-49, rather than 48-49, though.Raylan13@fandom (talk) 04:07, March 12, 2011 (UTC)
Okay, I guess the sources part was filled in incorrectly. See {{Infobox zone}}. Even if it doesn't look so clean, it's usually best to leave refs unless you know they are wrong. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 13 Mar 2011 8:29 PM Pacific
Got it. Corrected a few other zones that had the same formatting problem. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 14:38, March 14, 2011 (UTC)

Battlegroups page

I didn't really know the reason for the fancy headings on the Battlegroup page, but I didn't want to take the time removing them. I guess the US rated battlegrounds list is a tedious, but valid source. Since it filters by players and not specifically by servers, to thoroughly go through it to confirm the WoWWiki list was correct would be painful.

Good catch on the RBG list. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 14 Mar 2011 9:35 AM Pacific

Fan art

Fan art is okay for articles, if it is good (albeit this is a matter of opinion) and is properly credited and licensed. Stuff may have been put on talk pages as proposals or because they weren't properly licensed or credited. We've been pretty loose about improperly licensed images on user pages or subpages, but the solution isn't really to remove it from those pages, but to delete the image.

Does that answer your question? I will think about some fan art guidelines. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 29 Mar 2011 10:36 AM Pacific
