Translation

Dear Fandyllic!

First of all, I'm an active WoW player (now). Because of the game's main language is English and there's a lot of Hungarian players asking tips and tricks using google I here to make translations.

There're some tries I found before I made a decision: translation only. I do not want to translate keywords like 'Quest' or 'Achievement' and so on. Some translators have their contribution to fully change the keywords but as you really know there are no any game interface made in Hungarian language.

So in this way I asking you to assist me the better way. I saw some Polish, Russian, etc. translations here. There're more than 2000 players came from Hungary, so it could be useful.

Regards,
Mike. —This unsigned comment is by Sednah (talkcontribs) 07:17, 3 January 2011. Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

Vandalism

No problems. I still check wowwiki occasionally for vandalism, and for ppl c&p'ing from wowpedia without attrib. I may prefer wowpedia to wowwiki, but I still don't like vandalism no matter where it is. Especially when ppl think they're 'helping' wowpedia by vandalizing wowwiki. Gems

Hey thanks! I'm new to wowwiki, well at least in editing, so make any changes you want. I Noticed that the gem list was still not updated so decided to contribute a bit. I also noticed in other people's code that they load their list from the individual pages, for example from 'cataclysm green gems' into the 'gems by stat list'. But somehow it doesn't show the other stuff on the 'cataclysm green gems', just the table. How do they do that? Since I actually made the table on 1 page and then just copy pasted it to the other. —This unsigned comment is by Foa (talkcontribs) 04:00, 13 January 2011. Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

A thing here

I don't get why you as a person would enjoy to move pages so that links to speculations and continus would be redirected suddendly such as the dark paladin part, a dark paladin is an kind of Ex-paladin, i only put up the speculation of what they are, and when you moved it, the dark paladin link redirected back to ex-paladin. --Ze mo 20:58, January 18, 2011 (UTC) Dimmymo

Users reporting vandals

Just wanted a quick clarification, if you could. On the WoWWiki:Violations page it states that users can put suspected vandals on the list so admins can review and investigate them. I believe this is also mentioned on the talk page. Yet when scrolling down, it says 'Do not add entries as "suspects", that designation is only for use by admins who have investigated the person in question'. If we haven't investigated the person in question, shouldn't that person be listed as a suspect, and shouldn't that be a tool available to all users? I only ask because the question has been brought up.

On a side note, when does a 'new user' become a 'user'? Raylan13@fandom (talk) 16:43, January 19, 2011 (UTC)

I removed the "(Admins-only)" part from the suspects section, since it was added without any discussion from what I can tell.
I'm not sure what criteria that protection mechanism uses to determine a "new user", but that's probably close to it. A "new user" is a user who has just registered and has less than 5-10 edits, I would say. If they have been registered for awhile, but have very few edits, they're still a new user in my mind. I also, give less credit to users who only edit private pages (user, guild or server). --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 8:54 AM PST 19 Jan 2011

Admin noms

Just wanted to point out a few additions to the admin nomination page before I headed out. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 21:37, February 11, 2011 (UTC)

Should we promote them now, or do you think we should wait a bit longer? Raylan13@fandom (talk) 18:47, February 21, 2011 (UTC)

Subzone links

The elinks for subzones don't appear to lead anywhere, I've noticed. Looking at the Shrine of Goldrinn, for instance, both wowhead and thott come up with errors when followed, and the mmochamp link doesn't contain any information. I think most of the subzone elinks do this, and if they do, do we want to continue putting them in? On another note, I wanted to make sure I was understanding the usage of stubs correctly - that they should be used when an article is in need of additional information. If an article is complete or very near complete, stubs don't need to be put in. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 20:44, February 22, 2011 (UTC)

Wowhead and Thottbot (which is now basically a clone of Wowhead) are not perfect, so just because their links aren't always good doesn't mean the data is invalid. Also, someday useful info may be associated with subzones based on id in DBs, they just aren't currently. My perspective is if there are external links available, we might as well have them linked. We could adjust the templates like in the past to only show the links we know are good, but it really turned out not to be worth the trouble unless the info was always missing (like how the official armory doesn't give NPC info anymore).
The tricky part about stubs is who decides what "very near complete" is? My general rule is that if Wowhead or some DB has some obviously useful data that WoWWiki does not, then it can still be considered a stub. A better solution would just be to have a live window into a DB and have WoWWiki only have additional info that would be user added like notes, trivia, strategies, related links, etc. If a page is missing some obvious stuff like an incomplete infobox or tooltip, missing crafted items it is used as an ingredient for, vendors who sell it, missing source info, it should be considered a stub. My goal is for the page to be the sole source for all related info. If it isn't it is a candidate to be stubbed.
From what I can tell, the main argument against stub tags is "I don't want people to think I didn't finish the page." My response is: it isn't your page. Get over it. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 22 Feb 2011 5:53 PM Pacific
Aye, aye, cap'n. I figured as much about the stubs, but wanted to make sure I was understanding correctly. I'll go back through the subzones I've done and add the external links to them tomorrow. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 01:58, February 23, 2011 (UTC)
It's not critical. Some subzones don't have ids, but are recognizable to players. Add elinks, if you want, but it should be low priority. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 22 Feb 2011 6:01 PM Pacific

Coords Map

How do I link the File:WorldMap-TolBaradDailyArea.jpg map to the {{coords}} template. I've added "Tol Barad Peninsula=TolBaradDailyArea" to the {{Coords/Naming}} template but that didn't do anything. Servian (talk) 23:51, February 22, 2011 (UTC)

Polls feature update!

Good evening!

We've just enabled an upgraded version of polls here :)

It's separate to the old <poll> extension (which will continue to exist for some time), and works a little differently. Since the rich text editor isn't enabled here, you can use Special:CreatePoll to create them. Polls themselves even have their own pages, and are included on pages like templates: {{Poll:Pagename}}

If you or your users have any issues or thoughts about it, please don't hesitate to let me know - user talk page, Skype, Special:Contact all work. As you're essentially getting an early preview of the feature, you can announce (or not) it to the users as you desire. (Also posting this to Raylan13). Kirkburn  talk  contr 19:48, February 23, 2011 (UTC)

Location articles

Just wanted to double-check, but I thought we decided when the location articles format was being reworked that subzones would be incorporated into the middle of the article and removed from the end, the end template replaced with the continent template rather than the zone. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 22:14, February 23, 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure we decided that, but it was mentioned. You should probably start a forum post requesting feedback. Personally, I like it in both places, especially on the really long location articles. It should be discussed anyway, since I'm a little confused about having a "Geography" section near the top, but having a list of subzones under "Areas of interest", since subzones are often based on geographical features. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 23 Feb 2011 2:20 PM Pacific
Above and beyond Forum:Zone/Location_Article_Revamp? It seemed you and I were the only ones commenting as it was, and the changes made to the initial idea seemed to address the concerns that were brought up then.Raylan13@fandom (talk) 22:45, February 23, 2011 (UTC)
A fresh post might spark more interest. We should start trying to encourage people to use the forums in general. Maybe when we get a bigger admin group. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 23 Feb 2011 2:48 PM Pacific
Should I hold off on revamping the zone articles, then? I've done about a third of the old world so far and Mount Hyjal.Raylan13@fandom (talk) 22:49, February 23, 2011 (UTC)
No, keep going. Your format is fine. Any tweaking is optional when we get more feedback. My opinion is only my opinion. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 23 Feb 2011 2:51 PM Pacific
Not a problem. I'll wait to throw a new forum post over there when we have a solid admin base. Tweaking from there on should be relatively minor, I hope.Raylan13@fandom (talk) 22:53, February 23, 2011 (UTC)

Screenshots!

Good evening!

You could delete them if you want. But are there any possibilities of making a gallery of some sort? I'm just about to upload the same pictures with a new name tag "SR_[Insert theme name]". For instance; SR_Nefarian -> Picture of server first Nefarian kill. I will wait with uploading them, until I get a headsup on the gallery "issue" as I suppose you didn't like the format/amount. And I'm still going to keep updating the community pages for my server (Stormrage-EU) even though I've retired :-)

PS: I'm new to editing in Wowwiki :)

Best regards User talk:Panchas

Edit: Cheers for the tip :)

Screenshots - part 2

Sorry for buggering you so much, but here comes another question:

When it comes to deleting the pictures, is that something that a so called "moderator" can do (if you can call anyone a moderator on a wiki page), or is it something I can do? After reading a rather large amount of guidelines, help: posts and templates, I found the Speedydelete function. Is that the one I should be using?

When it comes to bandwith and having "server pictures" on the page; How many pictures is accepted, and am I really allowed to have such pictures up? Is there any possibilities using image sharing sites like imageshack and photobucket to reduce the bandwith usage of Wowwiki to a minimum, or do all pictures have to be hosted by the Wowwiki client?

After reading the image guidelines, I saw that I had at least violated one rule; image naming :-)

Cheers for the work you're doing.

Re:Updates

You've made some excellent points, but I don't know that we want to forsake updating one thing over another. There are a variety of reasons why any one visitor would come to the site; for instance, I often come for the location of things and extra little tips on quests and such because it was often annoying having to wade through comments on database sites to find that out. Since I've been given some extra hours to work, it might be best for me to take on the updating of all the minutia, like the new zones, old zones (with NPCs, quests, rewards, locations, etc.), and what dungeons I can solo. I'm mostly concerned with SFK and VC, as I know the former was a bit of a mess that I'm still working on. The zone revamps I'm placing last on my list of things to do, and I'll likely only hit two-three zones every Tuesday (only because it's maintenance day), minus the ones I do when I step into a zone, like Vashj'ir. For the remainder of that day I'll be working on achievements and then professions, saving professions for last because I'll be putting in guides for each.

So I'll work on all those things, which should free up you, Bubsy, and Servian to work on specific projects. It might not be a bad idea to compile a list of things you think are important to focus on, just to provide a clear focus. In-depth review of classes and reps are two I can think of off the top of my head. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 15:51, March 11, 2011 (UTC)

Battlegroups page

I removed the ood tag on the Battlegroup page and put a blurb in the 'notes' section on how to find the realms for each battlegroup. It's a roundabout way of finding the current information without having the benefit of a list like you found on the EU forums. The battlegroups are still up to date on the page (I ran through them and checked), which is why I removed the tag, but I'm not sure the roundabout method is adequate to remove the source tag. It would be nice to find a list at some point like the EU CM posted.

Also, I didn't know why there were colored sections on the page for the heading, see also, and external links. It's looks out of place compared to the other articles, but I didn't want to mess with it if there was a reason. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 16:53, March 14, 2011 (UTC)

Fan art?

What is the policy on fan art and where it should be located? I looked at the Fan art page and it isn't clear where users should upload that sort of thing, unless it's directly tied to their fan fiction. Poking around, I noticed that some art for Jaina Proudmoore was moved to the talk page. Is that where we should move fan art when it gets put into articles, or should they be moved to the users' pages? Raylan13@fandom (talk) 17:24, March 29, 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, that pretty much answers it. Just saw some uploads recently that caught my eye on Tirion Fordring and Rhonin. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 19:06, March 29, 2011 (UTC)

Vandalism?

I'm not really good at the whole Wiki editing thing, so I hope I'm doing this right.

It looks like there has been some possible vandalism done by a user named Ratam, Ebon Champion. I notice you had done some revisions on the goblin racial pages that he created, but he also made some edits to several pages connected to the Deadmines adding information which I do not believe is factual. He mentions a short quest chain that reveals many of the old bosses of the Deadmines are still alive, but he does not provide any kind of link to the quest chain in question, and I do not believe it even exists.

A user by the same name also posted similar information on several other sites. Perhaps this is actually factual and there has been some new development in the past few days that I am unaware of, but it seems unlikely. Someone may want to look into this and see if this is actually correct or not. I didn't want to just flat-out add him to the vandalism page when I can't be entirely sure if that's what it is or not.

Thank you for your time. Cendrin (talk) 04:50, April 3, 2011 (UTC)

Parser Functions and Variables

I was wondering, is there a consolidated list of the Parser Functions and/or Variables that your wiki uses? The Parser Functions Help has little information in it, but I also have not reviewed the MediaWiki Parser Functions either. The Variable Help is very useful, but every Wiki I've ever used has more variables than I see indicated in the Help. This is not a criticism, just need some clarification really.

By the way, I will definitely take your recommendation and submit to the forums. I just have to get my User page to a place where I feel it can benefit me first. Mostly just brainstorming at the moment. FuzzicalLogic (talk) 22:45, April 9, 2011 (UTC)

Re: US realm list by datacenter

In March, you added a request for multiple citations to the page. There was no official announcement for the moves to the datacenters, and there won't be. The only reason users knew about the move was because of the 24 hour downtime for each of the battlegroups, followed by an IP address change for the servers when they came back up, and the tracerts showing that the servers had physically moved. The only time the servers COULD have moved was during the 24 hours of downtime.

I recommend removing the citation needed links, as there's not going to be any links from a Blizzard employee stating they were moved. Especially now, since its a year later and the old forums (which may have mentioned it, but its quite doubtful as only Tech Support would have dealt with it) have been deleted. Resa1983 (talk) 16:10, May 27, 2011 (UTC)

Actually, you can't get citations for IP addresses, because they change with every server restart (hotfixes, maintenance, etc). Also, Blizzard employees don't give out IP addresses anymore. They either get a user to do netstat, or they just tell the user to get the IP address from either this page, or the wowpedia version, and add that if the user's server's IP address isn't listed, to use another IP address for another server in the same battlegroup. Theres really no way to get a citation from Blizzard. Resa1983 (talk) 17:11, May 27, 2011 (UTC)

Would like to interview you

Hi Fandyllic,

I’m continuing my research (on WoWWiki and WoWPedia) this summer and hope to interview several of the core contributors about their experiences. Would you be available at some point this summer for an interview?

I also wanted to share an article of mine about WoWWiki that was recently published; you can find it on the front page of my website (linked to from my faculty page, below). For the most part it talks about the writing processes of the community and how members work well together because of shared attitudes and beliefs about writing on a wiki. If you have any questions or feedback, I’d love to hear it.

Thanks for considering this. If you're interested in participating, you can contact me here via email <tinyurl [dot] com/5ug7gqq>. Dakhma (talk) 14:11, June 13, 2011 (UTC)

WMV Shots?

Was wondering what you thought about adding model viewer shots to item pages, like Mace of the Blood Price. I know not all of them can be found 100% of the time, but it might be nice to have some images. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 23:21, June 18, 2011 (UTC)

As long as it is an item that is available live or on the PTR (or has ever been on either), more screen shots the better. If you can add them easily, do it, but don't kill yourself. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 18 Jun 2011 4:23 PM Pacific
