These carnivorous fish are known to be one of the fiercest creatures in the ocean. However, their dangerous reputation really only applies to a few select species; the most aggressive species of shark, the bull shark, the tiger shark, the lemon shark, and the oceanic white tip shark have made attacks against people that have spread to the masses and caused worldwide fear of these creatures. While these specific sharks are extremely territorial and will attack most anything they deem a threat, most sharks overall will generally avoid people.

The great white has a particularly notorious reputation from such movies as "Jaws." However, it should be known that most human attacks made by this species are purely accidental. A surfer on a board or a diver with fins is easily mistaken as being seal-shaped, a great white's favorite prey. It should also be known that sharks are the garbage collectors of the sea. The items found in a shark's stomach have varied from fur coats to wallets to car parts, and even include a crocodile's head.

Smaller sharks, ranging anywhere from 1–8 feet long are usually the non-aggressive variety and will only attack their prey. The aggressive species named above can be anywhere within 10–15 feet in length, though there are other passive sharks this size too. Great whites have been known to get as big as 22 feet long, but are usually around 15–20 feet on average. The largest shark in the world, known as the whale shark, is also the largest fish in the world and can reach 45–50 feet in length. However, this particular shark is actually one of the most harmless creatures in the ocean. It only eats krill and other small microorganisms by filtering them out of the water, much the way a comb-toothed whale feeds, and will basically ignore divers and other creatures that are swimming near it.

Sharks circle and observe potential prey, then dart in and bite with their powerful jaws. The bite of a shark has been recorded to be among the top 10 in the world in terms of power. A shark can locate creatures underwater within a thirty-foot radius. This ability works only when the shark is underwater. A shark can notice creatures by scent in a 180-foot radius and detect blood in the water at ranges of up to a mile.<ref>{{ref book |author=Blizzard Entertainment |authorlink=Blizzard Entertainment |title=[[Monster Guide Web Supplement]] |isbn=1300002129 |pages=18}}</ref>
