Welcome to the World of Warcraft portal

Via transclusion into Portal:Main, this page supersedes the old Main Page as the default homepage for the wiki. It is mostly unchanged in design and scope with two main exceptions:

  • Interface related links have been removed, as the Interface portal can carry these.
  • Tabs have been added for navigation between the wiki's portals.

Feedback is appreciated. Kirkburn  talk  contr 18:14, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

New main page designs

I've been working on an overhaul for the main pages - see User:Kirkburn/Dev7 (you will probably need to refresh your cache). It's somewhat forced by having to move the ad position to the top right (though it is an opportunity to better integrate it in the design).

What I am going for:

  • 300px right column, non-negotiable. For stuff that'll show on each portal (i.e. FA, FM, WoWWiki news, more in future like polls).
  • Left column header - also shows on each portal.
  • Tabbed area - different on each portal.

Trying to get the design and clean and clear as possible - working with 1024 as a minimum resolution, though this is difficult: the tabs look like they'll have to stack, plus some text gets kinda squished. Colouring still a bit unsure on, but need to differentiate sections.

The code is way simpler (and better) than the current version, and is easier to expand with new stuff. Kirkburn  talk  contr 22:51, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

The plan is the put this live tomorrow (May 2nd), assuming no blocking problems come up. It's not a huge design change to the previous designs, but it does allow much more content :) Kirkburn  talk  contr 02:34, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

May as well list the main changes:

  • Layout and colour changes, same modular approach, full-page width used.
  • No longer doubles up the site logo.
  • Better integration of ad, should allow us to provide better ads.
  • Cleaner header area - some info moved to the sidebar area.
  • Randomised FA, FC and FM, from a larger pool than previously (added about 15 new of both, with design tweaks).
  • RSS feeds from the big WoW sites on relevant portals. Good for relations :)
  • Polls! A better extension for this should be incoming, but it's fairly cool for now. Position is low down (for now) so it's not overbearing. What types of questions? Dunno really, anything relevant for the time. Might do one to ask "what were you more excited for: wc3, wow, tbc, or wotlk?".
  • WC3 patch infobox on the Warcraft universe portal
  • Revamped community portal - more relevant content.
  • Bunch of other text tweaks to improve the experience.
  • Oh, and it works better between browsers too. I hope.
  • All this, and the produced code is almost exactly the same length :)

CSS has been in the files for a few days (on Monaco at least), will check before it goes live. Kirkburn  talk  contr 02:44, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

It's live. Unfortunately, RSS feeds killed the main page, so unless that can be fixed, for now none are on the WoW portal. They remain on the other portals as they at least don't die. Kirkburn  talk  contr 11:32, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Polls

Polls appear to be a success! Currently the poll asking "Do you like polls?" has 62% yes votes out of 673 currently cast, so it looks like a good idea to push this further. The current extension is fairly rudimentary and has drawbacks (e.g. any text change in polls makes a new poll, so they have to be perfect out the door) - however, there is another in the works that will eventually replace it. For now, this is enough. So now, the important question is:

What do we ask? Polls are shown on every portal, so there's no WoW-restriction. Got an idea? Visit Wowpedia talk:Featured article/Polls. Kirkburn  talk  contr 22:45, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Sub-portals

Could it be an idea to split the WoW portal into four portals? I'm thinking of the current portal as a general WoW portal, with three sub-portals:

This way information on a particular part of the game could be found easily, without "interference" from the parts of the game behind and/or in front of you. And if you want a general wow portal, the current one would still be there. Thoughts? CogHammer Ose t/c 14:41, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Possible, though I'm not sure how you would split up the content. Certainly adding sections for each game on the WoW portal I can do, given the extra height we can now use. Kirkburn  talk  contr 14:30, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Corrupt FA Image

Thanks, I thought it was just me :) Will see if I can fix. Edit: should now be fixed. Kirkburn  talk  contr 14:31, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

did something happen?

hey what happened to all the pictures, ect. not one can be found on any of the pages.... no head articles, no nothing. is there some updating thats going on that i am not aware of?Krasusinwow (talk) 00:17, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Must be just you, as I can see it perfectly. Try reloading the page or clear the cache by holding CTRL and pressing the reload button, or holding ctrl and shift while pressing R.--g0urra[T҂C] 00:20, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Search bar

I am having trubble with the search bar, i click in the bar and write a search but sometimes i discover that "Search WoWWiki..." does not disappear, so accidently search something like "Search WoGrom HellscreamWWiki..." or something similar. If someone can fix it, consider doing so. Chaos of Warcraft (talk) 19:07, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the report - the engineers are taking a look at it. I know the problem myself. Kirkburn  talk  contr 12:04, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

I've found that this issue is usually caused by either a partially, or incorrectly loaded script. Using NoScript in FireFox would cause this line to consistently stay in the search box. Folashir (talk) 05:26, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Portal:main

Anyone find the phrase "Portal colon main" a lot less sexy than "Main page"?--Hobinheim (talk · contr) 15:01, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

It's killin mah vibes too, mon. --Sky (t · c · w) 06:10, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
Point taken. I was originally going for Portal:World of Warcraft, but that's not a long term solution. Main Page still works, and it's not as if I don't hide the title :P Kirkburn  talk  contr 09:26, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
Well, you could hide the title for the main page, just like the english/german/dutch/french Wikipedia do.--Iggey (talk) 05:53, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Front page

It says on the front page "Wrath of the Lich King is alive!" but shouldn't it say "Wrath of the Lich King is live!", unless "alive" is supposed to be there? Rolandius Paladin (talk - contr) 06:33, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

can anyone help me?

I'm a sysop in the Hebrew version of WOWiki and I want to use the monace skin for my wiki. do you know how can I change it? 17:06, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

New "SmartPlayer" Ads

PLEASE get rid of the new "SmartPlayer" ads. They're obscenely obtrusive--the ad they load with CANNOT be paused and CANNOT be muted.

-- Eponymous (talk) 00:18, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

If you've got a link to the ad, follow the policy at Wowpedia:Bad ads so we can find it. --k_d3 13:19, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
Should I report spanish ads too? Dr.M.Ginius (talk) 17:07, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
I believe the language of the ads is targeted to the demographic of your geographical region, however since this is an English wiki it might interest them to know that non-English ads are being shown and they might take some action. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 17:16, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Broken Link in Main Menu

Ok, this is my first ever ...anything on WoWWiki, and I sincerely hope that I'm doing this right.

One of the links in the menu at the left of every page is broken. The link in question is {World of Warcraft} => {Popular Categories} => {Game terms}. Clicking the link takes you to Game Terms which was deleted in June 2008. The proper page that it should be linked to is Game terms. Evidently, it's case-sensitive.

On a different note, I glanced through Wowpedia:Talk page guidelines. If there are some more articles that every new user should see, please leave me a message. Thanks.

-- Decipheringchaos (talk) 17:53, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Well, I just got the Welcome to WoWWiki message on my personal talk page, and it has a bunch of helpful links for newbies. So disregard my request for "more articles that every new user should see."
Decipheringchaos (talk) 18:04, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
Good spot! Fixed. Kirkburn  talk  contr 15:18, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

New Layout

Did you build Portal:Main for someone with a ridiculously small screen because it's ridiculously narrow. Then there's Portal:World of Warcraft which is twice as wide and twice as empty. Set some resolution and width standards? Also I'd say most guilds are working into Ulduar and having the boss links was quick and accessible. Something you may want to restore on your MOST VISITED articles. Mkdwtalk 20:54, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

I also find it interesting that when you're at Portal:Main and you click 'Discussion' it redirects you to Portal talk:World of Warcraft, but when you try to go back by clicking 'Portal' it takes you to Portal: World of Warcraft and not Portal:Main. Mkdwtalk 20:58, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Betterable statements

Id recommend to the users of this wiki to don´t use statements such "striking resemblance" and "obvious reference", and to correct these to simply "[...] bears a resemblance [...]" or "[...] reference to/ is likely a reference to [...]" and such. What do you think? Dr.M.Ginius (talk) 01:29, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Cataclysm

Should I create an article abou the Cataclysm rumored thing? (like "Cataclysm (proyect)" or "Cataclysm (Blizzard") It will probablly be revealed what is it relatively soon at the Blizzcon, but I think some people may be a bit confused about it, so the article may help. I ask because it would probablly be an extremely speculative and controversial article, and I know in wikis the speculation should be keep in low amounts. So, you think said article would help, or just annoy?Dr.M.Ginius (talk) 19:12, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Cataclysm expansion already exists.--SWM2448 19:15, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Missing background image/coloring?

Just a moment ago, any and all pages I open WoWwiki-wide have lost the dark background image as well as the dark gray coloring for the main window the wiki content resides in. Background is, at the time of this writing, white, with black text. Apart from being rather painful on the eyes being used to the dark background, this has made certain things such as tables, which I'm guessing don't pull down background color information from the stylesheet (or where ever); for example, the Gem Properties page (http://www.wowpedia.org/Gem_properties).

Was this intentional, and is the intent to change it back, or a glitch that resulted in reverting to some default color scheme? ...Just posting as a way of reporting it, and to find out more info. Thanks!

-- ChromWolf (talk) 16:34, February 15, 2010 (UTC)ChromWolf

Sometimes one of the stylesheets fall out. Usually a normal refresh does the trick, sometimes you need to clear the cache as well. If several people see it for a longer period, it might be something with the servers. CogHammer Ose talk/3721 19:11, February 15, 2010 (UTC)

I am one of the heads of the Carmageddon Wiki. Our stylesheet was started by, basically, copying yours (then tweaked and modified into it's current form). A few days ago, our theme reset, and refreshing doesn't restore it to it's intended dark scheme. I was informed that you had a similar problem. So, could you please tell me what you did to fix it? JaffaCakeLover (talk)

We're using a custom theme for Monaco, whoever told you we had to reset it doesn't know what they're talking about. I haven't seen anything switch around lately (aside from the buttons which were announced, but that's hardly the whole skin switching to white like yours) and none of the other admins or prolific users around here have said anything. Sorry. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 04:33, March 26, 2010 (UTC)

Wowwiki theme is gone!

After searching for "Warlord" in the Wowwiki search bar, The theme for the site turned from its awesome Wrath of the Lich king feel to this horrible white and blue bright theme. I tried looking for answers to what to do to fix it if it was a issue on my end. I tried reloading the page, Pressing CTRL+ the Reload Key to clear the cache, And I tried SHIFT+CTRL+R. But nothing has worked. How can I fix wowwiki's theme from my end? Or could someone fix it for me?

  • Happened to me as well, and I was logged out (meaning anyone coming to WoWWiki will see that white-blue theme). Of course, logging in didn't help any. Lyom (talk) 16:32, May 24, 2010 (UTC)
This is probably a server-side cache issue, try waiting a day or so. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 16:46, May 24, 2010 (UTC)

My account hacked! Help!

Hello!

Me and my friend was playing wow with my friend today at my home on his account and I noticed that my charater is online. I havent played wow in ½ years, so I was wondering why my "sotafilosofi" (80 dk) is online. I went to armory and my charater has been in botanica, many times, so I belive I've got keylogger or spyware and my account information has been spreaded. When I went armory, The botanica gave me clue that it must be a farm bot is playing on my charater. I have never gave my password to anyone or no1 have had a chase to get it anyway but a spyware. I changed my password, but there is now authenticator code and it says "Please enter the eight-digit code displayed on the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator that is attached to this account." - What is this???? I've never Set and auth. key on my account. Please help me to get my account back! No1 couldn't go to battlenet with my cellphone cuz i got nokia 1100 wich sucks! Help me, because blizzard won't help me! Thanks!

This is not Blizzard Support. You must call them to resolve this. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 11:58, July 27, 2010 (UTC)

Poll

Haven't there been a pole? I remember some pole that asked something about capitals (which is your favorite I think). So if this is true why was it taken off?--JVS (talk) 15:11, September 26, 2010 (UTC)
