The Shadow Orb was a magical artifact created by the Orc Shadow Council of Gul'dan. Its ten pieces were found by Maiev Shadowsong in the Tomb of Sargeras in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne expansion Night Elf Campaign.
One of it's little known properties is that it will drive the bearer to pursue a goal to the point of madness. In the case of Gul'dan, he was driven to madness to obtain the Eye of Sargeras. In Maiev's case, she was driven to recapture Illidan at any cost.
