Little is known about Prince Malchezaar except that he is a Man'ari Eredar, and is possibly a sub-commander of the Burning Legion. Due to his status as the current ruler of Karazhan, he is considered by many to be the tower's final boss. However, some consider the creature Nightbane, (who is only available to be summoned after killing Malchezaar at least once), to be the true final boss of Karazhan. You can encounter Prince Malchezaar after the Chess Event.

Attacks and Abilities

  • Summon Infernal - Every 45 seconds or so, Malchezaar will summon an Infernal which, about 3 seconds after landing, casts a Spell fire incinerate [Hellfire] AoE roughly the size of the one Baron Geddon uses. Each Infernal lives for about 180 secs, and there is no limit for how many of them can be up at the same time. Typically you will have 3-5 infernals up at a time until the end of Phase 2 (see below), after which they will start increasing rapidly. These infernals are stationary, and can be avoided by the raid.
  • Enfeeble - Periodically Enfeebles 5 people, excluding the tank chosen at random, which reduces their max hit points to 1, and healing effects and health regen to 0% for about 7 seconds. Do not try to heal these people as it will do nothing. Enfeebled people must stay 30+ yards away from Malchezaar and watch out for Infernals. After the Enfeeble is up, players return to their previous health.
  • Shadow Nova - Malchezaar will cast Shadow Nova (3-second-cast) 3-5 seconds after Ability creature poison 01 [Enfeeble] that has a range of about 30 yards. It deals about 3000 shadow damage and includes a knockback. This attack can be outranged by healers and ranged DPS, so even if they are enfeebled it does not cause much concern. Melee must get out of range, however as long as they start running right away they will have plenty of time to avoid the Shadow Nova.
  • Shadow Word: Pain - Cast periodically on the MT. Can be dispelled. Cannot be reflected. 1500 damage per tick.
  • Thrash - Gains 2 additional attacks against current target every a few seconds to a few dozens of seconds.

General Tips:

  • If you dispel Shadow Word: Pain fast enough, a mage can cast Peticon-magical Spell nature abolishmagic [Amplify Magic] on the MT to make healing easier.
  • Healers can stand at max range for heals on the MT and be out of range of the shadow nova, thus able to continue healing during enfeeble.
  • Malchezaar cannot use Enfeeble on the highest target on his aggro list. However, since aggro is not pulled until 110% of the MTs aggro for melee and 130% for ranged, it is possible for someone to be higher than the MT without pulling aggro, and thus cause the MT to be a target of Enfeeble.
  • The range of the Hellfires from the Infernals are not nearly as big as it seems graphically, which means that there is some leeway to where you can move and avoid damage.

Phases

Prince Malchezaar has 3 phases:

Phase 1

  • Tank Malchezaar in a corner somewhere with the tank's back to the wall to avoid knockback.
  • DPS him steadily down to 60%, being mindful of Enfeeble, Shadow Nova, and the Infernal AoE.
  • If you start to get cornered by Infernals, have your tank move to another part of the platform. Try to do this before Phase 2.

TIP: Trolls can use berserking when hit by enfeeble to get a free haste bonus.

Phase 2

  • At 60% health, Prince Malchezaar will warp in axes, which substantially increases his melee damage.
  • Applies Ability warrior sunder [Sunder Armor] (stackable) to the main aggro target.
  • Melee Ability warrior cleave [Cleave].
  • Stops casting Spell shadow shadowwordpain [Shadow Word: Pain].
  • Continues to Enfeeble and Shadow Nova.
  • DPS him as quickly as possible down to 30%, being mindful of Enfeeble, Shadow Nova, and the Infernal AoE.
    • You can watch the Infernals fall from the sky and have a good idea of where they are going to land. This will allow you to move to a safe spot before they hit the ground in the middle of your raid.

Phase 3

  • At 30% health, Prince Malchezaar throws away his axes and they fly around attacking a raid member.
  • Stops using Enfeeble however he continues to Shadow Nova without warning other than his 3 second cast-time.
  • Melee damage on the tank returns to normal.
  • Resumes casting Shadow Word: Pain
  • No longer sunders or cleaves.
  • Make sure the person being attacked by the axes communicates to the raid in vent or teamspeak so they can be healed. The damage they do is easy to heal through, but if ignored may cause the death of your healers or dps.
  • At 30% the Infernals will start to spawn much more frequently and Malchezaar must be killed as soon as possible. Raid movement and communication is paramount during this phase to avoid taking damage from the Infernals. Each infernal will land on a 20 second timer -- you literally have <2 minutes before there will likely be too many Infernals up, and you wipe. Burn him down fast.
  • Below 30% he will random cast amplify magic on raid members, this will greatly increase damage they take. It is a short duration debuff which is non dispellable.

Known Bugs

  • Occassionally after wiping the Prince will no longer aggro at all. This is a known issue and seems to appear often after running out of his area for wipe recovery. This issue is NOT fixed as of patch 4/3/2007 2.0.12. Soft reset of the instance may work, but if you are going to wipe just die near the very entrance to his platform, do not kite him through the whole instance. If a soft reset does not work, have a warlock enslave an imp or kite a trash mob right beside him. This will force him to attack you and cause him to reset to his normal status after you die.
  • If a hunter feigns death or rogue vanishes during a wipe, Prince may not reset, and infernals may not disappear. This appears to be related the bug where he will not aggro, as when a hunter releases from feign death, even right in front of him, he will not aggro on the hunter. It does not appear that Divine Intervention causes this bug. It is, however, recommended, that vanish, feign death, and invisibility not be used to prevent this bug from occurring. If this bug occurs, follow the procedures for the bug listed above.

GorehowlModel

Gorehowl as seen in-game.

Gorehowl is the legendary two-handed axe of the Hellscream family of orcs. The weapon was famously wielded by Grommash Hellscream, chieftain of the Warsong clan, and was later also held by his son and heir—Garrosh, Warchief of the Horde—until he discarded it in favor of an Old God replica.

Inv axe 60 [Gorehowl] is also a drop from Prince Malchezaar in Karazhan, while Inv axe 2h gorehowl d 01 hd [Gorehowl, Might of the Warchief] drops in the Dawn of the Infinite.

History

Gorehowl was forged three generations before Grommash inherited it. Grommash's great-grandfather used Gorehowl to kill six legendary gronn. Their hearts were sealed into the blade, granting it untold strength.[1]

When Golmash Hellscream, the father of Grommash, was locked in the jaws of a giant gronn, he found the strength to stab Gorehowl into the gronn's eye and kill it alongside him. When they fell, it was the gronn who died first.[2]

GorehowlCinematic

The Shattering - Thrall and Garrosh

Thrall giving Gorehowl to Garrosh.

As a member of the Old Horde on Draenor, Grom Hellscream took part in the destruction of Shattrath City, Gorehowl in hand. Attacking Vindicator Nobundo, the axe would have cleaved the paladin's torso in two if the draenei had not leaned back. Already sickened by the red mist, Nobundo was able to crush the fingers of Hellscream's right hand with his Light-blessed crystalline hammer. This compromised the orc's grip with Gorehowl and prevented Hellscream from attacking him further with the axe.[3]

Hellscream had been the first to partake of the Blood of Mannoroth, eventually coming to regret it. When Thrall met him, it was clear to him that Grom had the means by which to liberate his lethargic brothers and sisters. After Hellscream again drank the Blood of Mannoroth in Kalimdor, in his hands, Gorehowl was the weapon which slew the demigod Cenarius.

During the second coming of the Burning Legion, Hellscream took his axe to the pit lord Mannoroth after Thrall was beaten into unconsciousness. With a single blow, Hellscream cleaved his adversary's weapon in two and slew Mannoroth. Hellscream perished shortly afterward, but he had managed to break the curse over his people, freeing their souls and spirits from the demonic curse forever. It seems that afterward, Gorehowl was retrieved by Thrall or the orcs of the Horde in general and kept in Orgrimmar.

Before the Shattering, Thrall himself gives Gorehowl to Garrosh, who wields it in the duel resulting in the death of Cairne Bloodhoof.[4] Garrosh wielded the legendary weapon wherever he went.[5]

When Garrosh foolishly decided to go against the advice of Baine Bloodhoof and Hamuul Runetotem and let the tauren solve their quilboar problem, Garrosh barreled forward and assaulted Brambleblade Ravine with fifteen Kor'kron Guards. The sole survivor, he nearly lost Gorehowl and his life, were it not for the intervention of Baine, Hamuul, and a handful of Sunwalkers.

Gorehowl

Gorehowl, left discarded in the Vault of Y'Shaarj.

Garrosh left Gorehowl behind in the Vault of Y'Shaarj. It was discovered by Jaina Proudmoore and Lor'themar Theron, although it's unknown what happened to it later.

The warchief replaced the original Gorehowl with an Old God replica of the weapon named Inv axe 2h orgrimmarraid d 01 [Xal'atoh, Desecrated Image of Gorehowl].

Warlords of Draenor

Warlords of Draenor This section concerns content related to Warlords of Draenor.

In the alternate timeline, Grommash used Gorehowl to kill Mannoroth after rejecting the demon's blood. Some time later, he appears to have given his Gorehowl to Garrosh; Grom was not seen wielding the axe in any of his subsequent appearances in Draenor, while Garrosh used it at Grommashar. Following Garrosh's death in his mak'gora with Thrall at the Stones of Prophecy, Gorehowl remained near his corpse where Thrall had deflected it.

Gul'dan retrieved Gorehowl and brought it to Grommash in another failed attempt to convince him to drink demon blood.

Inv axe 60
Main article: Gorehowl (item)

Gorehowl drops from Prince Malchezaar in Karazhan. This is presumed to be a non-canon drop, as it turned out Thrall kept it following Grommash's demise and ultimately passed it down to Garrosh.

Description

Gorehowl is a famous weapon. The sharply curved axe head, with an intricate series of grooves in it,[6] is massive, well worn, and permanently stained with old blood. Its wickedly curved blade has two notches in it, and many small holes in the head near the handle.[7] When swung, the notches causes the axe to "sing" its own battle cry, just as Grom once did, which gave the weapon its name.[8] The skull on the blade is believed to be that of a slain goren.[1] The leather wrap on the handle would have been made from clefthoof hides.[1] When it wasn't held in Garrosh's hands, he hooked it onto a brace on his back.[9]

Icon-RPG This section contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.

Grom Hellscream’s axe has a heavy blade that is notched and stained, with sharp, wicked curves. Small holes dot the blade near the handle; when the wielder swings the axe, air whistles through these holes. The sound keens over the battlefield, magically strengthened and imbued with otherworldly power. Gorehowl is one of Azeroth's most feared and notorious weapons.[10]

Speculation

Questionmark-medium
This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

Malchezaar

It has been speculated that Prince Malchezaar may have gotten his Gorehowl from an alternate timeline, considering his quote during the encounter: "All realities, all dimensions are open to me!"

Elaynea

Elaynea Welton the Wind and Sea‎ had a weapon with Gorehowl's model. If it is not a mistake, it could be Gorehowl that Garrosh had dropped in Pandaria. After Elaynea died in Tanaan, Garrosh may have retrieved the weapon and used it in Grommashar. Grommash's Gorehowl may have thus still be in the warchief's possession which would explain why he was seen with Gorehowl in Highmaul.

Highmaul

In the Highmaul raid, Grommash briefly appears with Gorehowl. It was thought that he might have retrieved it from the Stones of Prophecy. Since the legendary questline proved this wrong, Gorehowl being in Highmaul was probably an oversight and error.
