The large naval base has massive walls and gates, an archery range, a stable, a blacksmith, tents, and two watch towers at the top of the mountain which the fort is located upon. The eastern tower is the home of and the western tower is the home of , both targets of the Horde. There is also a central tower in which a captured high elf, , is chained to an iron ball and seeks help and rescue by the hands of the Horde. At the top of this tower resides , leader of Northwatch Hold, who also is target of the Horde.
The inhabitants of the naval fortress of Northwatch Hold are friendly towards the Alliance, and they can also shop with the Innkeeper. The residents of the hold are targeted by the Horde who are trying to claim the land, as well as a vengeful due to an unprovoked attack on his ship.

Northwatch Hold received a flight master and new quests in Cataclysm, reflecting the Alliance's invasion of the Barrens.This section concerns content exclusive to the Warcraft novels or short stories.
Garrosh Hellscream and the Horde attacked Northwatch Hold as a stepping stone in their quest to destroy Theramore. The Hold was completely routed, especially after Garrosh used molten giants against it.
Later, after the Horde's advance was stopped, Varian Wrynn and the Alliance retook the Hold.
