Overview

In World of Warcraft, movement generally refers to the speed a player character or mob moves around on the ground (only ground level movement for players).

Modes

Players have several forms of movement available:

  1. Walk mode – The slowest unmounted speed, usually only used for looks, since people generally want to get around as fast as possible.
  2. Run mode – The fastest unmounted speed, usually on all the time, since people generally want to get around as fast as possible.
  3. Ability druid travelform [Travel Form]/Ability druid flightform [Flight Form] mode – Available only to Druids, these forms give 40% extra movement speed and the ability to fly, respectively.
  4. Mounted mode – Requires a mount, giving 60% or 100% extra movement speed at the penalty of a cast-time; and a restriction on abilities, including attacking.
  5. Flying Mount mode – Gives a 60% or a (possible) 280% increase in speed on the ground and the ability to fly. Speculation on the Nether_Drake speed has been 350/450% increase, but this could be highly inaccurate.[[1]]
  6. Flying Transportation – Fixed routes on individual flight paths, but faster than any personally controllable mode.
  7. Mass Transportation – Fixed routes on a mass carrying boat, tram or zeppelin. When accounting for estimated distance traveled, this is generally the fastest mode, but some routes can be slow because of their indirectness to the destination (coast of Feralas to [{Feathermoon Stronghold]] is a clear example).

Run/Walk

  • There is a command key shortcut to toggle between Walk and Run mode.
  • Switching between Walk and Run or vice versa is instant.

Mounted

  • Getting on a mount has a 3 second cast time and this can be interupted by entering combat, moving, jumping and other such effects.
  • Dismounting is generally instant and you will transition to Run/Walk mode.
  • Mounting and dismounting from a flying transportation is instant (once you've picked the destination or arrived at destination).

Mass transit

  • Mass transportation on boat or zeppelin over long distance has a "dead time" where you can't move around or do anything while a map appears showing the route. The tram never has a "dead time", but you can jump off a long way from an end terminal, which is generally bad.

Increasing Movement Rate

Run and Mounted modes can be increased with buffs, enchants, and items.

Also see Movement speed effects, for a complete list of available items, skills and spells to improve movement speed.

Decreasing Movement Rate

Run and Mounted modes can be decreased with attacks and debuffs.

Also see Movement speed effects, for a complete list of available items, skills and spells to decrease movement speed on a target.

Losing Control

Some abilities, effects, powers and spells can cause a player or mob to lose control of their movement:
