Mataus the Wrathcaster is a level 60 quest giver located at Light's Hope Chapel in the contested territory of Eastern Plaguelands. He is affiliated with the Scarlet Crusade.

He is a rather unfriendly Warlock/Shadow Mage accompanying Scarlet Commander Marjhan while she engages in discussion with members of the Brotherhood of the Light, a minor and more violent offshoot of the Argent Dawn. He tends to treat others with outright contempt and holds a ridiculously high opinion of himself, even so far to the point of referring to himself in the third-person. Interestingly, the markings on his face are most commonly found on members of the Cult of the Damned.

Mataus is responsible for creating the Ice and Shadow Guard enchantments, which can be applied to leg or head equipment to provide a permanent 10 resistance to the item. Mataus will trade one for 10 Insignia of the Crusade and 30 gold.

There is no story or hint as to what Mataus has done or been involved with before his current appearance. As of now, he is for all intents and purposes, "lore-less". On an entirely separate note, many players find it humorous that despite his rude and violent text, his voice files reflect that of the jolliest male voice samples. "Hey there!" Have a good one!" And "Can I do something for you?" all in a chipper, happy voice are common. Whether this is a development oversight or an intentional joke remains unknown.

He starts the following quests:
