Overview
Mana shield is a mage's best friend and worst killer. When this is up, physical and magical damage will be absorbed at the cost of 2 mana per point of damage. The shield collapses after absorbing a set amount or 1 minute passes, whichever comes first.

Tips and Tactics
- Initially only absorbed physical damage. Magical damage absorption was added in Patch 2.0.6.
- While the shield holds, your castings cannot be interrupted by physical damage. Abilities like
[Kick] and 
[Shield Bash] will still interrupt you, though the damage they cause will be absorbed. - After it absorbs the given damage (consuming twice that amount of mana) it will collapse, but no cooldown means you can recast immediately, or even while it's still partially up to "refresh" the absorbtion pool.
- Don't be fooled by the cheap casting cost. Mana Shield can drain your mana decepetively fast. Rank 3, for instance, will leave you (80 + 2 x 300) 680 mana poorer in exchange for a measely 300 health. Use wisely.
- Since you don't lose casting time while shielded, Mana Shield can be effective against ranged attackers. Simply put the shield up and cast away.
- The Improved Mana Shield talent can make stomaching this spell somewhat easier - with both ranks of the talent active the quoted figure of 680 mana for 300 health drops to 560 mana (80 initial cast + ( 600 - [600 / 5])), thus saving you 120 mana, which is at least enough for one Frost Nova at that level.
