After making peace with the mammoths of the plains, I approached a mammoth elder and (somehow) spoke to him, and he told me I could now approach any bull mammoth mob and right-click to mount him, and then ride him to defeat some evil mammoth-oppressing Tauren dude. The mammoth mount had a little action bar and could trample enemies and charge, Warrior style.
