:This article is about the in-game raid boss. For character biography and Warcraft III appearances, see Magtheridon.

  +
General
Magtheridon is a quick raid encounter, similar to that of Onyxia's Lair, it's the raid wing of the Hellfire Citadel dungeons. The first phase of the fight is a relatively simple gear check/DPS race, the second phase an interesting battle for survival.

  +
* Quest:Friends in Dalaran

*At most 5 Abyssals can be up at the same time.

  +
Classes
Magtheridon:

*Level: ?? (Boss)

*Health: 4,750,000 (Patch 2.0.12)

*Cleave: ~8k on plate, frontal cone AoE

*Conflagration: A small AoE spell cast on random floor patches that does 6000 fire damage over 8 seconds.

*Quake: 50-second cooldown, first cast after 40 seconds. A knockback that hits every player every second for 7 seconds, interrupts spells

*Blast Nova: 60-second cooldown, about 2,500 damage every 2 seconds for 10 seconds to every player in the lair.

*Enrage: 22 minutes after the start of the fight, Magtheridon enrages and wipes the raid.

  +
Hunters
Manticron Cubes:

  +
* Bombardment changed to match description - it now ends on next Multi-Shot, instead of lasting its full duration and halving the cost of all Multi-Shots cast in that period.
*When clicked by a player, a channeling effect starts. This deals 800 damage per tick (400 dps) to the player clicking it

*If all 5 cubes are active at the same time, Magtheridons Blast Nova is interrupted, and while the five cubes all stay active, he takes 300% damage

*When the channel breaks, the player receives the 30 sec Mind Exhaustion debuff

Strategy
+
Mages
  +
* Permafrost tooltip changed. It no longer states the percentage by which the target's healing is reduced. As Mortal Strike, Furious Attacks and Wound Poison have all been changed to cause a 25% debuff (back up from 10%) it's possible that this tooltip change reflects a similar change in the healing debuff provided by the talent.
Raid Composition
*One Main Tank (Magtheridon)

*2-5 Off-Tanks (Channelers)

*2-4 Warlocks

*6-7 Healers

  +
Priests
No special buffs or gear are required, fire resistance in particular is *not* needed.

  +
* Characters under the effects of Levitate no longer use their run animation when moving.
  +
* Mass Resurrection can no longer be cast by priests in Spirit of Redemption form.

Setup
+
Items
  +
* Several items have had their durability increased.
Initially, five Hellfire Channelers are distributed around the room, each next to a Manticron Cube. All mobs in the room have no aggro range, the fight is started by any harmful action.

  +
* All equipable holiday items have been given durability amounts ranging from 16 to 25.
  +
* Frayed Abomination Stitching is now a poor quality item, and can be sold for .
  +
* Strange Spores is now a poor quality item.
  +
* Battered Jungle Hat now has a durability.
  +
* All thrown weapons now have a durability.
  +
* Stable Masters now sell Rope Pet Leash, which was previously only available at Breanni in Dalaran.
  +
* The companion pets from Winter Veil no longer require a Snowball to summon. However,
  +
** Father Winter's Helper and Winter's Little Helper are very busy and will complain before despawning themselves if summoned outside of the Winter Veil.
  +
** Tiny Snowman is smaller than usual and will fall over and die after a few seconds of being summoned outside of Winter Veil.
  +
** Winter Reindeer will not wear any of its holiday decorations outside of Winter Veil
  +
* The Scourge Haunt from Haunted Memento now won't be active at the same time as a normal companion pet. In addition, whenever it is summoned or respawns after disappearing (outrun, zoned, etc) the character will do a /cower animation for a moment. This also affects taxi mounts; they stop every few moments and turn around while the character cowers at the haunt.
  +
* A non-BoP version of Formula: Enchant Weapon - Executioner is now sold by Dealer Jadyan in Netherstorm.
  +
* Darkmoon Cards of the "Swords" suit are now sorted on the auction house under "Quest", matching the other suits of Darkmoon Cards.
  +
* Burd Sticker can no longer be used while mounted.

  +
Raids & Dungeons
It's best to have one tank and one healer assigned to each Channeler so that they can be tanked in their places and their shadow volleys do not overlap. If only four tanks are available, the first two Channelers can be tanked together. All other raid members start out at one Channeler, and then work their way (either clockwise or counter-clockwise) through the room.

  +
* In the Dungeon Finder the Cataclysm Heroic Dungeons have been recategorized as follows:
  +
** Hour of Twilight Heroic consisting of End Time, Hour of Twilight and Well of Eternity
  +
** Cataclysm Heroic consisting of all level 85 Heroic dungeons (including Zandalari and Hour of Twilight)
  +
* The new 4.3.0 Heroic Dungeons require an average item level of 353.
  +
* Completing a Random Heroic now awards .
  +
* City faction tabards now function in Burning Crusade dungeons. City reputation awards do not replace dungeon's own awards - while wearing city tabard you get both reputations at once.

Phase 1
+
Molten Core
  +
* Core Hounds and Core Hound Packs have had their size reduced by half.
After the first attack on a Channeler, the raid has 120 seconds before Magtheridon becomes active. During that time, as many Channelers as possible must be killed, three must be dead at least when the boss enters the fight.

  +
The Underbog
All Channeler casting should be interrupted as much as possible, the most dangerous being Dark Mending. After the first adds are dead, free healers should concentrate on the later tanks because they take more damage.

  +
* Killing mobs will now also give reputation for Sporeggar. This does not apply on heroic mode.

  +
Professions
The Infernals should be banished and/or kited. Warlocks and Hunters should do this job - early on they're free to DPS, but when Infernals start to appear they must immediately concentrate on them.

  +
* The alchemy specialization quests have been replaced with new ones which require Catalaclysm expansion mats. These new quests are available from alchemy trainers.
  +
* Basic Campfire has been renamed to Cooking Fire (ability).
  +
* The number of fragments from Archaeology finds has been increased.
  +
* The number of catches for Fishing skill up has been decreased.
  +
* Larval Acid, Light Silithid Carapace, Silithid Chitin, and Heavy Silithid Carapace are now grey (vendor trash) quality. The Leatherworking patterns that used these have had their reagent costs adjusted.
  +
* Glyph of Shadow can now be learned through Minor Inscription Research.
  +
* The icons for Enchanting scrolls have changed.
  +
* Enchant Shield - Lesser Block is now called Enchant Shield - Lesser Parry. Its effect had previously been changed from block to parry.
  +
* Engineering no longer requires Copper Modulators or Copper Tubes. Schematics previously using these components have had their costs adjusted and the items have become Broken Modulator and Bent Copper Tube, trash quality items.

Phase 2
+
World Environment
  +
* Tyrande Whisperwind now has a unique model.
When Magtheridon breaks his banish, he starts to build threat only when he actually targets someone. Use aggro building moves or misdirection, but not too early - let him target someone first. Besides killing any remaining Channeler(s) first and then nuking Magtheridon, the raid has to avoid Blast Nova by clicking on the cubes (see below). This is complicated by Quake, and in Phase 3 by Collapse.

  +
* Ethereals have new interaction voices.
  +
* Archbishop Benedictus is no longer present at the Cathedral of Light. Bishop Farthing reports that he has gone on a mission to Wyrmrest to aid in Deathwing's demise.
  +
* Angela Leifeld has replaced Shaina Fuller as Stormwind's First Aid Trainer.
  +
* Fire elemental corpses once again sparkle when they can be looted.

Phase 3
+
User Interface
  +
* Raid Icons have been renamed to Target Markers.
At 30% Magtheridon shatters the walls of his lair, causing the roof to crash down. This deals 5250-6750 physical damage plus a 2 sec stun to every raid member. It's very bad if the start of phase 3 coincides with a Blast Nova. Therefore, DPS should stop at about 35%, wait until a Blast Nova is over, and then quickly bring him below 30%. For the remainder of the fight, the ceiling randomly caves in on players ('Collapse). Collapses kill everybody in an 8 yard radius of the spot of impact. There is a cave-in animation shortly preceding it so players are able to safely move out of the way.

  +
* Added some buttons to rotate and move your character in Character Info interface, including the dressing room.
  +
* Mini-map Tracking has been reorganized and two new options have been added.
  +
* Items tracked on the mini-map will now indicate if the item is above or below your location in altitude when you mouse over the icon.
  +
* Restore to Default button added to the Dungeon Journal.
  +
* Added a Hide Bosses option in the lower-right corner of Dungeon and Raid Maps.
  +
* Equipped item level is now displayed in the Character Info pane<!-- the Paper Doll frame? -->.
  +
* The color that is used for displaying the levels on the Map depends on your current character level, ranging from gray (very easy zone) to red (very hard zone). The difficulty of the zone depends on its mob and quest levels.
  +
* A slower animation is shown if you acquire new spells, either by buying or as a quest reward (from class quests in starting areas).
  +
* You can no longer delete characters that have mail or heirlooms in their inventory or void storage.
  +
* Brazilian Portuguese localization has been added.
  +
* Report Spam now removes the offending item from the chat window.
  +
* Auction House now shows more relevant information in the "Lvl" (Level) column for some categories: Containers - "Slots", Gems - "iLvl", Recipes - "Skill" (to learn)
  +
* Users without the latest expansions now receive an "upgrade" button on the left of the character select screen to upgrade their account.
  +
* The Raid Browser has been moved to the "Other Raids" section of the new Raid Finder.
  +
* The Dungeon Finder eye near the Minimap displays how many players are joined in the group, when the number is lower than the maximum.
  +
* The popup menu of the Dungeon Finder eye is now positioned under it, instead of left from it.
  +
* The target portrait frame is less translucent (at least the Health, Mana and Energy bars and Combo points).
  +
* When queuing for multiple specific battlegrounds, the player now retains its position in the queue of the other queued battleground after one of these battlegrounds has been completed.
  +
* The countdown timer when announcing that a battleground/arena is about to begin now has a sound effect for the last 10 numbers.
  +
* Targets with buffs you can dispel now have those buffs highlighted.

  +
Game Engine
Damage from the initial shatter can be avoided by the usual means (Divine Shield, Ice Block etc.), but be careful to time these abilities correctly. The animation starts about 15-20 seconds before the raid actually takes damage.

  +
* Added a more extensive Color Blind mode.

  +
Game Client
The Manticron Cubes
  +
* When the game is started from the WoW.exe and there is a patch available, it will start the Launcher.exe instead. (Previous behavior: after login, prompted the user with a button to quit and start the Launcher)
Every 60 seconds Magtheridon starts to cast Blast Nova. About all wipes at Magtheridon happen because of an uninterrupted Blast Nova. In order to stop it, all five Manticron cubes must simultaneously be clicked (channeled) by players. Each cube should have one primary clicker assigned, with one backup if the primary clicker is disabled.

  +
Bug Fixes
During both Phases 2 and 3, Quake makes clicking the cubes more difficult. Since the cooldowns of Quake and Blast Nova are slightly different (50 and 60 sec), after three or four cycles, they happen at nearly the same time (fortunately Blast Wave cancels any active Quake), and then move out of sync again. It is important to know that each cube has a "safe spot". Standing up against the wall, directly behind the cube when facing into the middle of the room grants immunity to the knock-back from Earthquake. People standing there simply bounce in place.

  +
* Fixed a bug that would cause certain animations (such as the animation from opening the world map) to interrupt fishing.

  +
patches
Cube clicking should be done by the most reliable raid members, it's the single most important element of the fight. All other things being equal, it's possible to have the off-tanks from phase 1 do the clicking, because their DPS usually are the lowest, and they have higher HP and thus can keep the channel up for longer. It's desirable to keep channeling the cubes as long as possible, but staying alive is actually more important. Clickers should synchronize the release so that nobody takes unnecessary damage.

  +

Notes
*The cubes can be clicked from any direction, so aware players are able to channel from a safe location.

*Stand several yards from the cube while waiting for the next Blast Nova.

*In particular, do not stand close to a cube in Phase 3. If Collapse targets a player close to the cube, this may make the cube inaccessible.

*It is very important click all the Manticron cubes within the 2-second cast timer that happens some time after the raid warning "Magtheridon Begins to Cast Blast Nova" is shown. People must wait for the emote and not click too early.

Quest Information
Killing Magtheridon is required for Neutral, the last quest to obtain the Tempest Key. Even though the key isn't needed to get into The Eye anymore, the quest is still there and gives some nice rewards, including the title of Champion of the Naaru.

Quotes
Magtheridon randomly utters these quotes as players progress through The Blood Furnace instance, as well as his lair:

*"How long do you believe your pathetic sorcery can hold me?"

*"Illidan is an arrogant fool! I will crush him and reclaim Outland as my own!"

*"Wretched, meddling insects! Release me, and perhaps I will grant you a merciful death!"

*"Away, you mindless parasites! My blood is my own!"

*"Vermin! Leeches! Take my blood and choke on it!"

*"My blood will be the end of you!"

In addition during the fight:

*Aggro: "Thank you for releasing me. Now... die!"

*Draining: "Not again... NOT AGAIN!"

*Freed from the draining: (laughs evilly) "I... am... UNLEASHED!!!"

*Phase 3: "I will not be taken so easily. Let the walls of this prison tremble... and FALL!!!"

*Kills a player: "Did you think me weak? Soft? Who is the weak one now?!"

*Death: "The Legion... will consume you... all...." (gurgles, dies)
