Kariel Winthalus was a blood elf Loremaster. He fled the devastation of Quel'thalas, ending up in the ruins of Eldre'Thalas now known as Dire Maul. He was killed while trying to gain knowledge from the Shen'dralar ancients found within.
Finding his remains completes the quest 
[60] Elven Legends.

The remains of Kariel Winthalus can be found in the Dire Maul library. They are next to Lorekeeper Lydros.
