Were you looking for the type of armor augments known as Inscriptions or the class lore from the RPG Inscriber?

Inscription is a profession which will be introduced in the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Inscription will allow players to augment the cooldown, damage, or mechanics (stun, knockback, DoT, HoT, etc.) of a spell. It will have two aspects: augmentation of abilities and spells with the creation of a new type of item ("scrolls", for example, from ink, parchment, and other reagents).[1] Every player will get a new spell book page to which they can add six glyphs — currently, three major and three minor.

A sub-skill called Ability miling [Milling] will accompany Inscription that will produce reagents (pigments) from herbs similar to how the Inv misc gem bloodgem 01 [Prospecting] sub-skill of Jewelcrafting works.

Inscribing abilities for other characters will involve the creation of Inscription-based scrolls which can be traded, bought, or sold at the auction house in the same manner as other items.[2]

Scribes[3][4] will also be able to create Vellum for enchanters to put their enchants on, this will enable enchanting scrolls to be traded, and sold on the auction house.

Those who don't purchase any expansion will be able to use items created by a scribe, though only those who buy the The Burning Crusade expansion will be able to get the profession and only those who buy the Wrath of the Lich King expansion will be able to level it beyond 375.[5]

Main article: Glyph

Scribes will create Glyphs that allow players to modify their spells and abilities.

Major glyphs will be effective in combat — adding damage over time or stun to a physical attack, for example — while minor glyphs will give convenient or cosmetic improvements, removing the need for some spell reagents.[6]. Major Glyph recipes are taught by Inscription Trainers,Minor Glyphs may be learned only through discovery by Inv inscription tradeskill01 [Minor Inscription Research].

Gathering Profession

As of the Wrath-Logo-Small beta, Herbalism is the primary gathering profession for Inscription.[6]

    0. Content Patch Before Wrath of the Lich King 08/25/2008 05:03:00 PM PDT by Eyonix

With the release of Wrath of the Lich King approaching, we wanted to provide you with some important information. In preparation for the expansion, we will be issuing a new content patch in the coming weeks. Much like the patch made available shortly before The Burning Crusade's release, this content patch is designed to bridge current game content with that of the expansion and will contain some exciting changes and additions.

We have outlined some of the larger features scheduled to release with the patch below:

    New class spells and talents
    Stormwind Harbor
    Barbershops in capital cities
Zeppelin towers outside of Orgrimmar and Tirisfal Glades
Two brand-new Arenas featuring challenging new layouts, terrain hazards, and moving obstacles
    Guild calendar
    Hunter pet skill revamp
    New profession: Inscription

As mentioned above, this is not a comprehensive list, just some of the major highlights. We’ll post the full patch notes as soon as they’re available. Regarding Inscription, please note that all Burning Crusade players will be able to select Inscription as one of their two professions and level up to a skill level of 375 with it. Upon the release of Wrath of the Lich King, players who purchase and install the expansion will be able to continue leveling in Inscription and the other professions beyond 375.
