OrcAltar

Altar of Storms as seen in Warcraft II.

Altar of Storms refers to certain structures used during the Second and Third Wars. They were initially created by the warlock Gul'dan to channel demonic energies into ogre-magi. Altars of Storms were imbued with the corrupted power of the great Runestone at Caer Darrow. Only a few of the original Altars of Storms remain. During the Third War, many of the Altars of Storms were retooled by troll masons to channel shamanistic energy in order to revive fallen heroes.

History

Second War

Carved from the Runestone at Caer Darrow, the Altar of Storms channels dark and arcane energies through the bronze figures that tower above it to pervert the innate elven magiks of the Runestone. These energies, lost when the orc warlocks were destroyed by the Doomhammer, are now used to create the powers of the ogre-magi. It is here that the ogre-magi are imbued with new spells and skills to aid them in their fight against the Alliance. The Altars are avoided by the rest of the Horde as the intense energies that emanate from their cold surfaces can be… unhealthy.[1]

Third war

BTNAltarOfStorms

Following Thrall's reformation of the Horde, the altars were retooled.

Once used to channel the demonic energies of the Burning Legion, these altars have been retooled by troll masons. Using the rediscovered elemental abilities of the shamans, these altars serve as a kind of "gate" to revive fallen warriors. When a hero dies, his spirit can be recalled at these altars to continue service for the horde.[2]

Current times

There are three known Altars of Storms remaining.

The Altar of Storms in the Burning Steppes lies in the shadow of Blackrock Mountain. The Blackrock clan still uses it for their rituals.

Another Altar of Storms can be found in the Blasted Lands. Currently, Lady Sevine and her servants can be found here, along with Dreadscorn.

In Quest:Skullcrusher the Mountain, Cho'Gall says that the last "Altar of Storm" is the Altar of Twilight in Twilight Highlands. Skullcrusher the Mountain is fought here.

Warcraft Adventures

Warcraftadventures2

In Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans, one scene would have had Thrall standing before Orgrim Doomhammer, Kargath Bladefist, and Kilrogg Deadeye on an Altar of Storms in some sort of meeting.

RPG information

Icon-RPG This section contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.

An Altar of Storms stands in the Searing Gorge. Orc warlocks in the Second War invented a method to grant intelligence and magical powers to their ogre allies. This method involved arcane edifices such as this Altar of Storms, one of the few remaining from the Second War. They are now relics. The Alliance destroyed several such altars in the Second War. The Searing Gorge altar is cracked and scarred, but its remaining energies draw elementals and ogre magi to the area. A dangerous place.[3]
