The term quartermaster has a number of meanings in World of Warcraft, mainly associated with faction quartermasters. These are NPCs who will sell items to players that have accumulated a sufficient reputation level with a particular faction. They also sell championing tabards, which allow the player to gain reputation with a faction in level-relevant dungeons. The term quartermaster has been increasingly used since The Burning Crusade expansion when each of the dungeon reputation factions had an NPC identified by name as the quartermaster. The term is commonly applied retroactively to classic vendors who served a similar purpose.
Typically the items available at Exalted level are of a higher quality than items which may be obtained at earlier levels, or may include rare cosmetic rewards such as Mounts and Companions. In the classic game, faction quartermasters (though not always called such) often sold unique recipes that were sought after for professions.
