Forums: Index WoWWiki general Rename WoWWiki

Recently, WoWWiki's name has sort of been a bit disgraced. The name WoWWiki doesn't really attract people anymore, rather the name WoWWiki tells people "Wikia kept this. Don't edit. Move to Wowpedia." It basically just sounds like we stole all our articles and the real WoWWiki left and became Wowpedia.

WoWWiki seems like a fake. I say the wiki should rename. Renaming the wiki should help remove hostilities with Wowpedia, as it makes it seem less like Wikia forced us to stay here. It seems more like "there was a content fork" if we rename.

Furthermore, it will bring to peace some arguments such as "which is the real WoWWiki?". Do you think many people are interested in this wiki now? They're really not. Most people are interested in Wowpedia, because they WoWWiki moreorless moved to their own domain rather than splitting. WoWWiki sounds like we just clinged to it.

Did we cling to it? Did we cling to the content? Are we clinging onto everything we can still have, and just stifling those who would rather just edit a wiki about Warcraft? I'd prefer to be able to edit this wiki without being told "WOWWIKI MUST DIEEEE!!! ALL WILL BE BUUUUUUUURNED!!!".

We should rename the wiki and cut off all ends to being the official WoWWiki. We're just annoying Wowpedia. We're not WoWWiki anymore, we have to accept that. And Wowpedia isn't WoWWiki either. WoWWiki is split. There is no WoWWiki anymore. There are just two wikis about Warcraft. And that's how it should be. Naming ourselves WoWWiki is lying, and like I said, annoying Wowpedia and other contributors.

I am in no way an administrator or anyone of authority on the wiki. Heck, I'm not even an editor. Feel free to just ignore me. I just really think we should rename. I don't what we should become, but we cannot keep calling ourselves WoWWiki. That name has become torn now, we've got to become our own identity, like Wowpedia. By all means, we can keep the domain name (after all, SmashWiki is at and Pikipedia is at, but we cannot go by that name anymore.

Or maybe we could change from being about World of Warcraft to being about Wings of War? No. Just because WoWWiki has changed doesn't mean it's not still WoWWiki. --Kris talk 02:00, November 18, 2010 (UTC)

Wikia wouldn't let you change WoWWiki's name even if you asked. They have too much advertising revenue attached to the name. If they change the name, it will kill all their numbers.
Deadlykris, you need to work on your logic. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10:59 PM PST 17 Nov 2010
Can Wikia really stop us changing the wiki's name? They haven't exactly been Mr. Popular recently, so us renaming can't be too much a problem, right? If they actually just stop us from changing the wiki's name, even if we decided not to change the name anyway, I'd doubt it'd go down too well. Manga Maniac (talk) 07:44, November 18, 2010 (UTC)
Wikia owns WoWWiki. If they can prevent wikis from defaulting Monobook, adding more navigation menus, removing the side rail, etc... Who do you think you have to ask to get the wiki name changed? Someone at Wikipedia? Please. Your ignorance astounds me. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 7:36 PM PST 18 Nov 2010
Removing side rail, adding navigation menus, forcing the new look and stuff is a layout thing. They can get away with layout things. But pretty much every wiki has the right to rename. You wouldn't see Sardapedia being denied a name change.
That said, I'm aware Wikia would try to discourage it. They would discourage it and probably be slow in actually renaming the wiki. But I don't think they can actually just shout out "You are not allowed to rename".
They might try some sneaky tricks or something to stop the wiki, though. Manga Maniac (talk) 23:14, November 19, 2010 (UTC)
It'll still be --Kris talk 02:01, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
Now that we're not here defending it any more, I'm not sure there's anyone left to object to Wikia's plan to move WoWWiki to --Kaydeethree (talk) 07:09, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
Kris, I addressed the whole domain thing in the final paragraph of my rant. You should read it some time... Manga Maniac (talk) 11:15, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
KD3 has a good point. It is more likely that Wikia would want to change the name than responding to a community request. If Wikia wanted to respond favorably to community requests, we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place. That said, I've been looking at new content being created on WoWWiki vs. Wowpedia and WoWWiki is definitely going downhill. Wikia's attempt to attract inexperienced users while driving away experienced users is succeeding by looking at the type and quality of most of the new pages created on WoWWiki recently. Most are either character/guild or personal pages and the ones that have shared usefulness tend to be freeform written with no awareness of boilerplates, categories, consistent formatting, section headings, or tooltip infoboxes. Also WoWWiki no longer has KD3 and Pcj... ;-) --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 4:56 PM PST 20 Nov 2010
If Wikia suggested moving to in the past, I'm sure that would be a good possibility to set this wiki apart from the Wowpedia fork. Some other wikis are rebranding themselves as well, so WoW@Wikia might be a name you could use, but I really don't know Wikia's stance on these. Anyone else think that WoW@Wikia looks surprisingly nice? Manga Maniac (talk) 17:43, November 28, 2010 (UTC)
Not unless you make a cool looking wordmark logo that proves it. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 2:35 PM PST 28 Nov 2010

It makes sense to have this site's location fit with the other editions of WoWWiki and other Wikia sites, even if the motivation of the person who suggested it is questionable. Is there someone at Wikia reading this who can weigh in? Selma Voss (talk) 08:02, December 5, 2010 (UTC)

Nevermind, I think I'll switch to Wowpedia like everyone else. Thanks anyway. Selma Voss (talk) 16:37, December 5, 2010 (UTC)
