Forums: Index World of Warcraft Dungeon Do's and Dont's

My 10 year old and I just got lambasted last night by our random dungeon groups - all sorts of colorful metaphors, getting kicked, "we suck this and that" so I just wanted to get some input on what is/isn't acceptable down there.

We dig WOW, have been essentially just grinding/questing for 6 months or so, not much "real life" interaction in the game. We're both DK 60's but again, have little experience in groups and even less in dungeons so we just need to know the etiquet. We got ripped for pulling and doing too much as dps (which i've read on this site is a no-no), slammed and kicked for not doing enough as tanks (our classes were not geared for tanking, we reset so hopefully that's better) and some guy threatened to kick my kids ass if he didn't give him back the leggings he rolled for..? really??

So anyway just need some advice...

Thanks in advance.

As a death knight tank/DPS myself, I think I might be able to give you a few pointers:
  • DPS is good, but if you're pulling aggro, not so good. Tanks get real pissy about it, and so do healers - primarily because that's more work for them to do. Do as much damage as you can, but have it where your threat meter is on above the portrait of your target. If it starts going up, lay off a bit before you hit 100%, or you'll be in trouble.
  • There are people who are really into their gaming, like me, but there are some who take it far too seriously, i.e. the don't-eat, don't-sleep, play-until-they-drop-dead types. Your "I'm gonna kick your ass if I don't get that item back" fool is probably an example of such a mindset. Don't mind it too much; you're gonna get it a lot.
  • As far as tanking gear goes, you're looking for a few things in your items: Stamina and defense are the two biggies (at least for right now, they're doing away with the defense stats in Cataclysm), and I think hit rating fits in there somewhere as well. In addition, whatever spec you may go with, put all five points into Toughness in the Frost tree, which will increase your armor value (another biggie for tanks). If at all possible, avoid any items with shield block; you can still use the item for boosting your defense and stamina stats, but it's a wasted stat line for DKs.
  • While you need tanks to do these instances, my advice is if you're uncertain about your tanking ability, I would wait at least until about level 72 - primarily because that's when DK tanking runes (Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle for two-handed weapons, Rune of the Nerubian Carapace for one-handers) are available. While tanking with two one-handed weapons is starting to go up a bit, most DK tanks I know don't think it's a viable spec, and so stick with the two-handed weapon with Stoneskin Gargoyle instead. Your two-handed weapons should have stamina on them; one that gets used a lot at 80 is the [Titansteel Destroyer], provided you can get the mats to make it (and trust me, they're not cheap!).
As for running instances? Your best bet, in my opinion, is to find a guild that is willing to help the low-levels out in some fashion. Usually you run into fewer loot squabblers and jerks if you run with your guildies.
Hope this helps somewhat. Happy slaying! --Joshmaul (talk) 05:13, January 28, 2010 (UTC)
