"Without the interaction of intelligent beings"
The Highborne, also known as Highborn or High-borne, (quel'dorei, meaning "children of noble birth" in Darnassian and "high elves" in Thalassian) were the upper classes of the kaldorei civilization and the favored servitors of Queen Azshara. Despite their near-identical physical appearance, the ancient kaldorei were already split across racial lines as night elves and "Highborne" elves. The Highborne were largely responsible for the War of the Ancients, and most of those Highborne who had allied with the demons and survived the war later became the naga or were turned into satyrs. Those that allied with the Kaldorei Resistance before the last battle of the war evolved into the modern high elves.

  +
I'm not QUITE sure this is the right place for this (or if it needs to be in that other section on discussing the topic itself), but several places on the page it mentions that the Emerald Dream is what Azeroth would be like without the interference of (intelligent) races. This is only partially true, environmentally friendly as it is. :)

  +
The Emerald Dream also doesn't show weathering effects or the ravages of time. It does, however, show nature's effects, like growing plants and trees, but without the accompanying animals. That is, vegetable forms of life but not animal. Mountains do not show the effects of wind or rain weathering, so many craggy spires or deep canyons (formed by running water over eons) are glazed over in the Dream. These are NOT the effects of intelligent beings, but rather of the (non-"nature", in the sense of plantlife) elements. Wind, water, fire, lightning, ect.
Today, they are obsolete as an organization as most became high elves after they were exiled from Kalimdor. Even the high elves are few in number because most survivors declared themselves blood elves after the Scourge invasion. One notable exception is the Shen'dralar, a holdout group against the Legion during the War of the Ancients. They were able to defend Eldre'Thalas (Dire Maul) but became isolated from the rest of night elf society, although they have recently sought to rejoin their kaldorei brethren in Teldrassil.

  +
I'm not sure what a better way to word it is, but it does paint a different picture. A world without the intelligent races would still see weathering effects and animal life, both of which shouldn't be in the Emerald Dream. So...basically I'm saying this is a bit misleading. I'm not sure if whoever wrote it wasn't familiar with that or not, but it was what I noticed most about Malfurion's trips into the Dream in the War of the Ancient's trilogy. Namely how the mountains were smooth and rounded, not weathered by the elements and time. And I can provide quotes supporting this, if needed.

What is this image supposed to be? Supposed to prove? It's a swatch from a WC3 map, not anything from WoW, and unless I'm forgetting something major, we never saw the Emerald Dream in WC3. Ergo, I'm going to presume someone's trying to pull a fast one here... --Brommon 14:08, 23 May 2006 (EDT)
The Highborne were the upper classes of the ancient kaldorei civilization, at first a nameless caste made up of night elves who had unusual intelligence, strength, skills, or wealth and thus found favor with the ruling monarch. Their vast arrogance and greed, garish and multicolored clothing, and decadent habits did not endear them to other night elves. In fact, these powerful families became convinced that they were superior to the rest of their race, and so they began to call themselves the Highborne. As a member of the same caste, the queen Azshara approved of the term and made it official. Plumbing the depths of the great Well of Eternity for knowledge they discovered primitive magic; and as time passed, they distanced themselves from the lower castes and began using their rank to selfishly guard their magical power, restricting access to the magical Well of Eternity to only themselves.

  +
Old Emerald Dream Data
The access of arcane magic to the ruling caste began to split the kaldorei nation across racial lines; and despite their outwardly similar physical appearance, those "Highborne" were transformed by the magic flowing through their veins. Families that belonged to the highest caste frequently arranged marriages so as to maximize the magical ability of their offspring. This selective breeding, combined with frequent access to the Well of Eternity, resulted in night elves with progressively stronger magical abilities and greater understanding of how to use those skills.

I recently edited that there are in fact areas in the game files you can access with GM powers that represent the Emerald Dream, even posted a youtube link of someone exploring it. It was removed with reasoning "no datamined contet", yet I see Ulduar related articles full of datamined information. And since it was youtubed as if being in-game (private server ofc, but it was/is in game files), so what's the deal? Why's some datamined content allowed to be here? --RocketBrother (talk) 11:10, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

  +
The Ancients
A kaldorei without Highborne blood — such as Illidan Stormrage — could master arcane power if he so wished (and had access to it). In fact, the mastering of the arcane arts was common among the populace, resulting in organisations such as the Moon Guard, the official military sorcerers.

It seems to me that the Demigods who die seem to be ending up there. We know for certain that Cenarius is there, and Malorne is rumored to be either there or at Elune's side. Just about all the others who died have either come back to life or rumored to come back soon. Then the whole thing about Ursol and Ursoc just "sleeping until they overcome their wounds." Sounds like a pretty obvious tie in to me. Is this worth mentioning? Meneldir 03:27, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

On Feb. 05 2008 Jeff Kaplan mentioned in an interview on Wrath of the Lich King that "some time after release" the next hero class (after Death Knight) might be an Archdruid and that the quest for this hero class would be "directly connected to Malfurion Stormrage and the much-anticipated Emerald Dream.". So one might conclude that the Emerald Dream is planned as a content patch for Wrath of the Lich King.

  +
I've removed this section because it is misinterpreting the linked article and causing confusion. Kaplan mentioned nothing of the sort in the article. The quoted parts concerning an Archdruid hero class and the Emerald Dream were conjecture on the part of the article's author. They were a "Zitron tip". That is, they were made up. --Djr 22:26, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Over time, the ever-more reckless use of magic by the Highborne and their queen led to their slow corruption and addiction to the power it granted, and the ripples sent into the Twisting Nether attracted the dread forces of the Burning Legion to Azeroth. The unlimited magical power offered by the demon lords seduced the queen and many of her servitors, and they agreed to grant the Legion entrance to Azeroth. Finally, giving themselves over to magic’s inevitable corruption, the Highborne fell to darkness and began to worship the Dark Titan, Sargeras, as their god. Some, led by Xavius, gave themselves wholly over to the service of the Legion and were transformed by fel magic into the satyr.

  +
:Ehm... Who wrote that wasn't that far from the truth... Whoa!!! look at this --N&#39;Nanz (talk) 22:02, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
To cement their dark pact, the ecstatic Highborne opened a great, swirling portal within the depths of the Well of Eternity which would allow the armies of the Legion access to the world, followed by Sargeras himself. In the cataclysmic war that followed millions died as the demons swarmed over the lands of Kalimdor and laid siege to the lesser night elves’ sleeping cities, leaving only ash and sorrow in their wake. Though the brave kaldorei warriors rallied from the heinous betrayal of their rulers and rushed to defend their ancient homeland, they were forced to give ground, inch by inch, before the fury of the Legion’s onslaught. The Legion was finally foiled by the efforts of the night elf Malfurion Stormrage, who in his battle with Queen Azshara collapsed the Well of Eternity, killing many Highborne and condemning those who survived to the sea floor where they were transformed into the serpentine naga by the mysterious Old Gods.

::'Archdruid hero class' and 'directly connected to Malfurion Stormrage and the much-anticipated Emerald Dream' are not equal to 'some quests'. Still woot.-- 02:04, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
After the Storm
Yet many Highborne did not meet their fate at the bottom of the sea. Some had betrayed their queen at the last minute, having realized the horrors she would unleash upon the world. These defectors had fled the capital city of Zin-Azshari, site of the Well, and were thereby spared when the Great Sundering tore Kalimdor apart. Others remained hidden away in far-flung strongholds such as Eldre'Thalas.

  +
"Dreamform" and "dream"
Those who had joined with the rest of their shattered peoples fled the rising waters of the Great Sea, eventually arriving at the base of Mount Hyjal, where they helped to rebuild the night elven civilization in the newly reshaped world. They were not entirely welcome: the night elves, now led by Malfurion, reviled Queen Azshara's former servants and were doubtful of their loyalty. Still, without the Well to supply their magic, the Highborne were considered little threat, and were permitted to rejoin night elven society.

  +
I'll talk about an extract of Stormrage, but no that is no spoiler of the story.

  +
In Stormrage, Tyrande (roughly) says that they should all fall asleep to get into the Emerald Dream, which Fandral replies that "dreamform" is different from "mortal sleep". But, in Nightmares, the intro states that those two things are one and the same.
However, many felt the pangs of their magical addiction and were tempted to use the power of a new Well of Eternity created by Illidan Stormrage, who from then on would be termed "the Betrayer" for his terrible crime. Though the use of arcane magic was forbidden on pain of death, the Highborne foolishly attempted to convince the kaldorei race of the power of magic by unleashing a magical storm upon Ashenvale. Their desperate gambit failed, and the Highborne were exiled; the night elves mercifully refusing to execute any more of their brethren.

  +
So who is right? Or did I read Nightmares wrong?

13:27, March 12, 2010 (UTC)
These exiled Highborne, now known as the high elves, took their punishment in stride, and led by Dath'Remar Sunstrider ("He who walks the day") set sail across the ocean in hopes of finding a new land to call their own. After a long and perilous journey, the Highborne arrived in the land known today as Lordaeron, and there established their kingdom of Quel'Thalas ("high kingdom" or "high home") and crowned Dath'Remar their king. There, they slowly changed in form, diminishing in size and losing their original purple skin to a pinkish hue. They abandoned the worship of the moon, adopting instead the sun, and became the high elves. From a vial of water from the original Well, they created a new one, the Sunwell, to serve as their source of magic. They remembered the mistakes of the past and used Runestones to shield their use of the arcane from the Burning Legion, taking care to practice the magic granted to them by their Sunwell with more care than their ancestors. Nevertheless, after their homeland of Quel'Thalas — and the source of their power — was destroyed by the undead Scourge, a radical group of high elves embraced their Highborne ancestry and resumed for the third time their reckless use of magic. Kael'thas Sunstrider renamed these people "blood elves", and traveled to Outland with Illidan to find a way to fuel their magical addiction. Those who did not travel with him remained behind and began to rebuild their shattered capital city of Silvermoon.

:Probably an oversight of earlier accounts. Without knowing the exact phrasing in both stories, a way to combine these statements is that preparing for actual sleep helps the transition into Dreamstate, and/or that the preparation is more like falling asleep than meditation. So Nightmares just simplified the explanation. ~ Nathanyel (talk) 17:02, March 14, 2010 (UTC)
Today
Some Highborne still exist in their original forms. One such group, known as the Shen'dralar, live in secrecy within their city of Eldre'Thalas — known as Dire Maul to outsiders. Those Highborne who live elsewhere in the world — such as Archmage Tarsis Kir-Moldir — are few in number; the majority having long since become high elves, blood elves, naga, or satyrs.

Linking the Emerald Dream to the non dream could cause problems, but what other threat could it cause?<br />

Does the Naga Queen Azshara linger in the dream in another form, or can people only be in ether the Dream or in regular Azeroth at any given time? <small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Knighthonor.</small>

For a Future Expansion
Several ghosts of dead Highborne still populate many of the night elven ruins left after the Sundering.

  +
So at BlizzCon 2010, it was mentioned that the Emerald Dream, will in fact, be in the future. Should this be included?

Since Ysera has sacrificed her power to stop Deathwing, does the Emerald Dream still exsist? (i.e, do the lesser Green Wyrms/Dragons watch over it now). And by extension, will Druids in general (obviously not in-game) be weakened because of it? --Illidarí (talk) 23:40, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Revision as of 00:12, 7 January 2012

This is the talk page for discussing improvements to the Emerald Dream article.

Analyze that!
If you wish to discuss the subject itself, please use Talk:Emerald Dream/Analysis.
Non-editorial comments made here should be moved to the Analysis page.

"Without the interaction of intelligent beings"

I'm not QUITE sure this is the right place for this (or if it needs to be in that other section on discussing the topic itself), but several places on the page it mentions that the Emerald Dream is what Azeroth would be like without the interference of (intelligent) races. This is only partially true, environmentally friendly as it is.  :)

--SubduedRadical 23:29, 23 October 2010 (CST)

The Image on This Page

What is this image supposed to be? Supposed to prove? It's a swatch from a WC3 map, not anything from WoW, and unless I'm forgetting something major, we never saw the Emerald Dream in WC3. Ergo, I'm going to presume someone's trying to pull a fast one here... --Brommon 14:08, 23 May 2006 (EDT)

Old Emerald Dream Data

I recently edited that there are in fact areas in the game files you can access with GM powers that represent the Emerald Dream, even posted a youtube link of someone exploring it. It was removed with reasoning "no datamined contet", yet I see Ulduar related articles full of datamined information. And since it was youtubed as if being in-game (private server ofc, but it was/is in game files), so what's the deal? Why's some datamined content allowed to be here? --RocketBrother (talk) 11:10, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

The Ancients

It seems to me that the Demigods who die seem to be ending up there. We know for certain that Cenarius is there, and Malorne is rumored to be either there or at Elune's side. Just about all the others who died have either come back to life or rumored to come back soon. Then the whole thing about Ursol and Ursoc just "sleeping until they overcome their wounds." Sounds like a pretty obvious tie in to me. Is this worth mentioning? Meneldir 03:27, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

WotLK

Ehm... Who wrote that wasn't that far from the truth... Whoa!!! look at this [1] --N'Nanz (talk) 22:02, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
'Archdruid hero class' and 'directly connected to Malfurion Stormrage and the much-anticipated Emerald Dream' are not equal to 'some quests'. Still woot.--SWM2448 02:04, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

"Dreamform" and "dream"

I'll talk about an extract of Stormrage, but no that is no spoiler of the story.

In Stormrage, Tyrande (roughly) says that they should all fall asleep to get into the Emerald Dream, which Fandral replies that "dreamform" is different from "mortal sleep". But, in Nightmares, the intro states that those two things are one and the same.

So who is right? Or did I read Nightmares wrong?

IconSmall Hamuul Loremaster A'noob, Arch Druid of the Noobhoof Clan (talk/contribz) 13:27, March 12, 2010 (UTC)

Probably an oversight of earlier accounts.
It might be a difference like the one between dreaming and lucid dreaming.--SWM2448 17:48, March 14, 2010 (UTC)

What is the threat of the Emerald Dream?

Linking the Emerald Dream to the non dream could cause problems, but what other threat could it cause?
Does the Naga Queen Azshara linger in the dream in another form, or can people only be in ether the Dream or in regular Azeroth at any given time? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Knighthonor (talk · contr).

For a Future Expansion

So at BlizzCon 2010, it was mentioned that the Emerald Dream, will in fact, be in the future. Should this be included? Hu'Alock (talk) 18:08, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

As your section title might be misleading though, I'll add that it sounded like a content patch, meaning a raid, not its own expansion. I think they phrased it something like "between 4.2 and 6.2" but I'd have to look that up again. ~ Nathanyel (talk) 05:47, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Fate of the Dream?

Since Ysera has sacrificed her power to stop Deathwing, does the Emerald Dream still exsist? (i.e, do the lesser Green Wyrms/Dragons watch over it now). And by extension, will Druids in general (obviously not in-game) be weakened because of it? --Illidarí (talk) 23:40, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

The green dragons watch over the Emerald Dream, but they did not create it. Just as magic did not disappear when Malygos died, so will the Emerald Dream persist even though the Aspects have lost their powers, as will time, life, and the earth itself. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 00:02, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Also, the dragons (and druids) don't draw their power from their respective aspects, they're more like students. Losing their power would be like forgetting the lectures. ~ Nathanyel (talk) 00:12, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
