A faction is a group of usually racial but sometimes ideological allies. Most in-game factions are described in Warcraft lore, but some were specifically introduced in World of Warcraft. Some groups that are not tracked as factions appear in the organization list.

Character Factions
Two main factions in World of Warcraft are the Alliance and the Horde. Players of one of these factions are always at war with the other. Most factions are tracked in-game by the reputation that a player character has with each faction.
Alliance
- Darnassus - Night elves
- Gnomeregan Exiles - Gnomes
- Ironforge - Dwarves
- Stormwind - Humans
- Exodar - Draenei (Burning Crusade expansion)
Horde
- Darkspear - Trolls
- Orgrimmar - Orcs
- Thunder Bluff - Tauren
- Undercity - Undead
- Silvermoon City - Blood elves (Burning Crusade expansion)
Battleground Forces
Prior to the patches preceeding the Burning Crusade players would earn items by gaining favor with Battleground Forces. Today those items are obtained with honor and marks, lowering the value of gaining reputation with the factions. However those determined to continue still, will obtained a new title for their character if they become exalted with all of their faction's battleground forces.
