Rumours have arisen stating that "The Deathbringer" is simply a title, and his true identity may be:
- Bolvar Fordragon
- Saurfang the Younger risen into undeath. Highly likely, considering the achievement has an Orc Death Knight image.
- Alexandros Mograine, father of Darion Mograine. Alexandros was a member of The Four Horsemen in the classic Naxxramas, but was removed for the level 80 version due to the advancement of the Ashbringer storyline. After the Battle of Light's Hope Chapel, the Lich King claimed "He is mine now!" after draining Alexandros' ghost.
- Uther the Lightbringer, Arthas' mentor and a powerful paladin, this would make him fit perfect for the role of the tragically resurected hero forced to serve the Lich King as his most powerful death knight. Another rumour that support this theory is if The Deathbringer is a title it would be the dark unholy version of The Lightbringer.
- Taelan or Karandra Fordring, this would put Tirion in a position where he becomes emotionally incapable of fighting or he becomes aggressive to the players. The theory is that the fight would either be played out as a fight against The Deathbringer with Tirion lying helpless on the ground or a fight where Tirion temporarily looses his mind and starts to attack the players (who then becomes forced to both fight the The Deathbringer while simultaneously crowd controlling Tirion)
- Renault Mograine, rumours suggest that this would complete the circle of all Mograines being transformed to death knights and this would lead to an emotional loaded brother against brother fight.
- A human-shaped abomination made of some or all of the above.
- Combinations of the above making it a Four Horsemen type of battle with The Deathbringer (if it is one person) as the leader, the most popular one seems to be Bolvar Fordragon and Saurfang the Younger (because of their similar deaths) and other things hinting that they are brought back as death knights.
