Captain Placeholder was originally created purely as a temporary measure, allowing players to travel from Menethil Harbor to Auberdine while a glitch in the boat system was being adressed. Captain Placeholder quickly became quite popular among players due to his ability to instantly transport players to the other continent at their own leisure, instead of waiting for the boat to arrive.
When he was removed from the game, a dedicated player going by the alias Eledainn created a song about him titled The Lament of Captain Placeholder which can be downloaded from http://wow.ogaming.com/music/Captain_Placeholder.wav.
