Nightfall is a warlock talent that gives [Drain Life] and [Corruption] a chance to grant the warlock an instant Shadow Bolt each time either spell ticks.
Notes
One of the main reasons why warlocks put points into the Affliction talent tree, Nightfall can dramatically increase the warlock's damage output, assuming it actually activates.
Nightfall does not proc when [Corruption] or [Drain Life] is cast. Instead, Nightfall has a 4% chance to proc EVERY time a Corruption or Drain Life spell ticks damage on an enemy target. Corruption ticks every 3 seconds, but can be placed on multiple targets to greatly increase your chances of proccing Nightfall. Drain Life ticks every 1 second. A common tactic against a single target is to place Corruption on the target, and then repeatedly Drain Life until Nightfall procs.
A given casting of Corruption (with 6 ticks) has a 21.7% chance of proccing Nightfall on one or more ticks. A given casting of Drain Life has an 18.5% chance of proccing Nightfall on one or more ticks.
Multiple procs of Nightfall do not stack. The warlock can only have one Shadow Trance buff at a time. It can, however, proc multiple times from the same Corruption/Drain Life spell.
[Glyph of Corruption] stacks with this, giving an increased chance for the same Shadow Trance effect on Corruption ticks.
Patch changes
- Hotfix (2011-02-18): Instant-cast Shadowbolts from Shadow Trance (both the talent and [Glyph of Corruption] versions) should no longer consume charges of [Backdraft] if both procs are available. Shadow Trance will always take priority and be consumed first when Backdraft is active. Subsequent Shadowbolts will consume Backdraft stacks.
- Hotfix (2011-01-18): While Nightfall is active, Doomguards will not instantly cast Doom Bolt.
- Patch 1.3.0 (2005-03-07):
- Fixed a bug where the Shadow Trance effect was lost without benefit. Previously, the talent had a 3%/4% chance of triggering. It now has a 2%/4% chance of triggering, and the tooltips have been updated to accurately reflect this change.
- The Shadow Trance buff granted by the Nightfall talent will no longer be used up by a shadowbolt that was in mid-cast.
