Joseph was a member of the Scarlet Crusade but now leads the Scarlet Renegadess in rebellion. He seeks to reform the order by leading a rebellion in the Scarlet Monastery. When first encountered he is known as Joseph the Awakened, the later wings of the Scarlet Monastery will see him known as Joseph the Crazed and finally as Joseph the Insane.

When he realized that the Scarlet Crusade was attacking the living instead of just fighting the undead he started a mutiny and now enlists Alliance help to defeat the actual leaders of the Scarlet Monastery. He becomes progressively unhinged as he fights through his former friends and allies in the progressing wings of the Monastery, hence the changes in his title.

Trivia

Joseph's deteriorating sanity is portrayed somewhat comically. In his first incarnation, he is calm and collected, even after learning of Bloodmage Thalnos' undeath. In his second incarnation, he has become more assertive, and typically of a Scarlet Crusader believes his cause is wholly righteous. In his third incarnation, he nervously reasons that he and "his boys" were forced to kill the other Crusaders, and that he deserves the title of "Scarlet Champion". He begins talking to himself, and ecstatically proclaims himself the new Scarlet Champion.

In his final incarnation, he is found dancing in the middle of the Cathedral as the battle rages on, and goes on to reveal his plans to turn the Undercity into a "Scarlet paradise".

His title changes each dungeon to convey this- firstly, "the awakened", then "the crazed", and finally "the insane". His increasingly paranoid ramblings are another testament to this.
