Overview
+
Classes
With the jump to Cataclysm level difficulty, the racial leaders of the Horde and Alliance have become a more formidable force to be reckoned with. While in Wrath of the Lich King most if not all of the leaders could be two or three-manned (in some cases even one-manned), this is no longer a viable option. Indeed, with an average of 103 million hit points each, the racial leaders now last a lot longer than their previous incarnations and hit far harder.

  +
Hunters
For the Horde! involves doing battle with King Varian Wrynn, Genn Greymane, Tyrande Whisperwind, Muradin Bronzebeard, Moira Thaurissan, Falstad Wildhammer, and Prophet Velen.

  +
* Bombardment changed to match description - it now ends on next Multi-Shot, instead of lasting its full duration and halving the cost of all Multi-Shots cast in that period. This has been reverted a few days later.

Pets
  +
* Silthid Colossi now have normal silithid sound bites associated with their attacks.

  +
Mages
The achievement is generally considered somewhat easier than its Alliance equivalent; Varian and Velen being the only racial leaders to sport elite guards and Varian being the only one to boast an active city.

  +
* Permafrost tooltip changed. It no longer states the percentage by which the target's healing is reduced. As Mortal Strike, Furious Attacks and Wound Poison have all been changed to cause a 25% debuff (back up from 10%) it's possible that this tooltip change reflects a similar change in the healing debuff provided by the talent.

  +
Priests
Forming the raid
  +
* Characters under the effects of Levitate no longer use their run animation when moving.
First, the raid's composition must be understood. Two tanks are recommended, though three cannot hurt. At least five or six healers are needed, though one or two more will not go amiss. The DPS comprising the rest of the raid should be briefed on what is expected of them; a ragtag group of newly-leveled players is not likely to last long or have the DPS to burn down 103 million hit point bosses.

  +
* Mass Resurrection can no longer be cast by priests in Spirit of Redemption form.

  +
Items
Though still a puggable achievement, with luck, it is highly recommended that it is attempted by at least a fair few reliable players - a capable tank especially. Chances of success will naturally increase largely if attempted by a guild group.

  +
* Several items have had their durability increased.
  +
* All equipable holiday items have been given durability amounts ranging from 16 to 25.
  +
* Battered Jungle Hat now has a durability.
  +
* All thrown weapons now have a durability.
  +
* Stable Masters now sell Rope Pet Leash, which was previously only available at Breanni in Dalaran.
  +
* The companion pets from Winter Veil no longer require a Snowball to summon. However,
  +
** Father Winter's Helper and Winter's Little Helper are very busy and will complain before despawning themselves if summoned outside of the Winter Veil. When summoned during Winter Veil, they will now mount a Winter Reindeer while you are mounted.
  +
** Tiny Snowman is smaller than usual and will fall over and die after a few seconds of being summoned outside of Winter Veil.
  +
** Winter Reindeer will not wear any of its holiday decorations outside of Winter Veil
  +
* The Scourge Haunt from Haunted Memento now won't be active at the same time as a normal companion pet. In addition, whenever it is summoned or respawns after disappearing (outrun, zoned, etc) the character will do a /cower animation for a moment. This also affects taxi mounts; they stop every few moments and turn around while the character cowers at the haunt.
  +
* Frayed Abomination Stitching and is now a poor quality item.
  +
* Strange Spores is now a poor quality item.
  +
* Darkmoon Cards of the "Swords" suit are now sorted on the auction house under "Quest", matching the other suits of Darkmoon Cards.
  +
* Burd Sticker can no longer be used while mounted.
  +
* Chaos Orb is now an ordinary tradable item and no longer bind on pickup.

Kill order
+
Raids & Dungeons
  +
* In the Dungeon Finder the Cataclysm Heroic Dungeons have been recategorized as follows:
While not set in stone, there are two generally employed kill orders.

  +
** Hour of Twilight Heroic consisting of End Time, Hour of Twilight and Well of Eternity
  +
** Cataclysm Heroic consisting of all level 85 Heroic dungeons (including Zandalari and Hour of Twilight)
  +
* The new 4.3.0 Heroic Dungeons require an average item level of 353.
  +
* Completing a Random Heroic now awards .
  +
* City faction tabards now function in Burning Crusade dungeons. City reputation awards do not replace dungeon's own awards - while wearing city tabard you get both reputations at once.

  +
Molten Core
The first is the easiet city to the hardest - Velen in the Exodar, followed by Tyrande in Darnassus, then the Council of Three Hammers in Ironforge and finally Varian Wrynn in Stormwind City.

  +
* Core Hounds and Core Hound Packs have had their size reduced by half.

  +
The Underbog
The second is the opposite, killing the most well-defended leaders first and then moving on. This kill order is Varian in Stormwind City, the Council of Three Hammers in Ironforge, Tyrande in Darnassus, and Velen in the Exodar.

  +
* Killing mobs will now also give reputation for Sporeggar. This does not apply on heroic mode.

  +
Professions
Each tactic has its advantages, though it is generally considered a good plan to hit Stormwind first. If Varian (and by extension Greymane) can be swiftly killed, then even if the raid disbands later in the attack, the hardest achievement will still be done.

  +
Primaries
  +
* Bloodvine and Souldarite, which have not been obtainable since the removal of the original Zul'Gurub raid, are now poor quality items. The patterns that used these components have had their reagent costs adjusted.
  +
* Larval Acid, Light Silithid Carapace, Silithid Chitin, and Heavy Silithid Carapace are poor quality items. The Leatherworking patterns that used these components have had their reagent costs adjusted.
  +
* Engineering no longer requires Copper Modulators or Copper Tubes. Schematics that used these components have had their reagent costs adjusted. The now useless parts have become Broken Modulator and Bent Copper Tube.
  +
* Practice Lock has been replaced with Clockwork Box. Clockwork Boxes cannot be used for lock picking practice anymore, but can be opened by Engineers, providing a skill-up and reducing the box to worthless Ruined Metal Parts.
  +
* Flying Tiger Goggles material requirements have been changed to avoid using leather.
  +
* The alchemy specialization quests have been replaced with new ones which require Catalaclysm expansion mats. These new quests are available from alchemy trainers.
  +
* Glyph of Shadow can now be learned through Minor Inscription Research.
  +
* The icons for Enchanting scrolls have changed.
  +
* A non-BoP version of Formula: Enchant Weapon - Executioner is now sold by Dealer Jadyan in Netherstorm.
  +
* Enchant Shield - Lesser Block has been renamed to the more accurate Enchant Shield - Lesser Parry.
  +
* Dramm Riverhorn in Un'Goro Crater now sells Plans: Runic Plate Boots, Plans: Runic Plate Helm, Plans: Runic Plate Leggings and Plans: Runic Plate Shoulders.
  +
* Plans: Phantom Blade now drops in Stratholme from Banshees, Nerub'enkan and possibly other sources.

  +
Secondaries
Getting there
  +
* Basic Campfire has been renamed to Cooking Fire (ability).
There are several methods to reach the Alliance cities. With the addition of the Have Group, Will Travel guild ability, it is possible for one player to summon the entire raid on the doorstep of an enemy city. This is the recommended tactic to employ, as it gives Alliance players less time to react.

  +
* The number of fragments from Archaeology finds has been increased.
  +
* The number of catches for Fishing skill up has been decreased.

  +
World Environment
If not possible, however, a standard warlock summoning stone will do the job, or simply flying there on mounts.

  +
* Tyrande Whisperwind now has a unique model.
  +
* Ethereals have new interaction voices.
  +
* Archbishop Benedictus is no longer present at the Cathedral of Light. Bishop Farthing reports that he has gone on a mission to Wyrmrest to aid in Deathwing's demise.
  +
* Angela Leifeld has replaced Shaina Fuller as Stormwind's First Aid Trainer.
  +
* Fire elemental corpses once again sparkle when they can be looted.

Tactics
+
User Interface
  +
* Raid Icons have been renamed to Target Markers.
Each leader has their own abilities and a standard tactic for dealing with them.

  +
* Added some buttons to rotate and move your character in Character Info interface, including the dressing room.
  +
* Mini-map Tracking has been reorganized and two new options have been added.
  +
* Items tracked on the mini-map will now indicate if the item is above or below your location in altitude when you mouse over the icon.
  +
* Restore to Default button added to the Dungeon Journal.
  +
* Added a Hide Bosses option in the lower-right corner of Dungeon and Raid Maps.
  +
* Equipped item level is now displayed in the Character Info pane<!-- the Paper Doll frame? -->.
  +
* The color that is used for displaying the levels on the Map depends on your current character level, ranging from gray (very easy zone) to red (very hard zone). The difficulty of the zone depends on its mob and quest levels.
  +
* A slower animation is shown if you acquire new spells, either by buying or as a quest reward (from class quests in starting areas).
  +
* You can no longer delete characters that have mail or heirlooms in their inventory or void storage.
  +
* Brazilian Portuguese localization has been added.
  +
* Report Spam now removes the offending item from the chat window.
  +
* Auction House now shows more relevant information in the "Lvl" (Level) column for some categories: Containers - "Slots", Gems - "iLvl", Recipes - "Skill" (to learn). Also, when sorted by "Rarity" column, Weapons and Armor are sorted with higher ilvl items at the top.
  +
* Users without the latest expansions now receive an "upgrade" button on the left of the character select screen to upgrade their account.
  +
* The Raid Browser has been moved to the "Other Raids" section of the new Raid Finder.
  +
* The Dungeon Finder eye near the Minimap displays how many players are joined in the group, when the number is lower than the maximum.
  +
* The popup menu of the Dungeon Finder eye is now positioned under it, instead of left from it.
  +
* The target portrait frame is less translucent (at least the Health, Mana and Energy bars and Combo points).
  +
* When queuing for multiple specific battlegrounds, players can now enter and complete battlegrounds without losing their place in any queues for other battlegrounds. As soon as the player is invited to join a battleground, any other battleground queues are suspended until the player has completed the battleground or declined the invitation. However, the player's place in any other queues is maintained, which often means that upon completing a battleground the player will immediately be invited to join any other battlegrounds they were queueing for.
  +
* The countdown timer when announcing that a battleground/arena is about to begin now has a sound effect for the last 10 numbers.
  +
* Enemy targets with buffs you can dispel now have those buffs highlighted.
  +
* The queue in the Honor frame now displays the status of and lets you queue for Tol Barad and Wintergrasp while on every continent.<!-- New in 4.3 for at least Deepholm/Maelstrom and Molten Front, unsure about Outland. Status on maps unchanged, TB only shows while in Kalimdor/EK, WG only while in Northrend.-->

Prophet Velen
+
Game Engine
  +
* Added a more extensive Color Blind mode.
The encounter with Velen is generally considered the easiest of the faction leaders, and the virtually non-existent player traffic within the Exodar leaves room for pre planning. It is often the first city to be attacked during a "For the Horde!" raid, due to its simplicity.

The raid should group up at the stairs, and to play it safe, pull Velen's two battlemasters before him. With them down, the raid can freely focus on Velen.

Velen pulls with his battlemasters, though if disposed of beforehand will only be protected by his Shield of Velen elite guards. One tank is enough to hold him in such a case.

Velen's abilities are not particularly potent, even after the step up to Cataclysm level difficulty. His shield is easily broken, and his infrequent use of [Holy Nova] can be easily healed through. His Holy Smite ability will be randomly cast on a raid member. For the most part, the encounter is a good example of tank and spank, and the extremely low chance of an Alliance defense raid allows breathing space.

Tyrande Whisperwind
Darnassus has several entrances, and can be entered through the usual portal or by ascending Teldrassil via flying mount. Rush straight for the temple, and deal with the large guard spawns before approaching Tyrande's balcony. With the raid in place, it is a good idea to look out for any Alliance players who may interrupt the battle.

  +
Game Client
At first glance, the battle with Tyrande can seem intimidating, due the presence of Malfurion Stormrage by her side. However, Malfurion does not engage Horde players, and will therefore not interfere with the fight against Tyrande. There are no elite guards or battlemasters, so only one tank is needed. Hold Tyrande with the tank's back against the wall opposite the balcony.

  +
* When the game is started from the WoW.exe and there is a patch available, it will start the Launcher.exe instead. (Previous behavior: after login, prompted the user with a button to quit and start the Launcher)

  +
Bug Fixes
Tyrande's major ability is her channelled Starfall. It is a powerful technique, and the small amount of space allocated for the fight leaves many members of the raid susceptible to it, most notably melee. However, the ability costs mana, and Tyrande can be drained of it relatively quickly via Mana Burn abilities. Tyrande will use a searing arrow on a random party member, and a moonfire, though again, only with mana. If drained completely, she will rely on her far weaker melee abilities, and the fight's difficulty will drop considerably.

  +
* Fixed a bug that would cause certain animations (such as the animation from opening the world map) to interrupt fishing.

  +

The Council of Three Hammers
Now the main ruling body of the Dwarves, the Council of Three Hammers serve as the faction leaders for Ironforge. The battle with Muradin, Moira and Falstad is somewhat comparable to the battle with Lor'themar Theron, Grand Magister Rommath and Halduron Brightwing in Silvermoon City, in terms of the triple boss fight mechanics. Two tanks are recommended, one to hold Muradin and one to hold Moira and Falstad. All three should be tanked within their throne room.

  +

The two major threats to the raid are Muradin, who boasts the highest amount of health of the three, and whether or not there is relatively high player traffic in Ironforge. Without player interference, the quickest strategy is to first focus on Moira. She will use priest abilities, though their potency can be easily ignored if she is given the raid's full attention. Once she is down, the raid should focus on Falstad. Falstad will make use of various Wildhammer shaman abilities, and hits far harder than Moira. Without Moira's healing he should go down fairly quickly.

Finally, Muradin should be dealt with. Like Magni before him, Muradin has both the Avatar and AoE pushback abilities, in addition to a storm bolt. With the other two dead and with low enemy player input, Muradin will follow suit and the raid will have done its job.

Despite being three leaders, their 103 million HP is split between them.

Varian Wrynn
King Varian is perhaps the hardest city leader to kill. The relocation of Stormwind Keep and the change of Stormwind's geography make getting to Varian undetected nearly impossible. Additionally, Varian’s elite guard are spread all the way along the path to the king, ranging as far as the steps of the keep itself. A fast kill is vital as Stormwind is highly populated during most hours and Alliance players may come to the aid of their King.

In addition, Genn Greymane accompanies Varian, further complicating the battle. Genn won’t attack for the first two to three seconds after aggro as he changes into worgen form. Genn should be tanked separately from Varian and kept away from the rest of the raid due to his Intimidating Roar. For his other abilities refer to Genn’s main article.

Varian retains his previous abilities of Heroic Leap and Whirlwind as well as continuously spawning guards. In total King Varian and Genn Greymane have the largest total health of all the racial leaders (over 150 million), however the biggest threat in this fight is definitely the Alliance playerbase, success can rely almost entirely on how many respond to your raid's attack.

Escape
After each leader bites the dust, a quick mage portal is advisable.

Victory!
With that, regardless of who went down first and last, the Alliance should now have each of their leaders on a two hour respawn timer and with the last victim's corpse fresh on the floor. Perhaps hurl an Orgrimmar Banner into it and relish in the taste of victory. Warchief Garrosh Hellscream will be most pleased with the puny Alliance leaders licking their wounds, and will send you a present along with words of congratulations.

Lok'tar! For the Horde!

The Letter From Garrosh
The bear is attached to a letter from Garrosh Hellscream, entitled "For The Horde!":

Notes and trivia
*A common occurance after a successful raid is a "counter raid" perpetrated by embittered Alliance members. To add insult to injury, wiping these usually reckless raids at Silvermoon, the Undercity, Thunder Bluff or Orgrimmar is possible.

*It is perhaps in good taste for a blood elf player to apologize to Prophet Velen after killing him, as a show of respect for his role in revitalizing the Sunwell.

*Even after the step up to Cataclysm level difficulty, it is still possible to duo Velen and Tyrande due to their somewhat weak abilities and probable lack of player-input, albeit a large timesink and not particularly recommended.

 • The Dungeon Finder eye near the Minimap displays how many players are joined in the group, when the number is lower than the maximum.
 • The popup menu of the Dungeon Finder eye is now positioned under it, instead of left from it.
 • The target portrait frame is less translucent (at least the Health, Mana and Energy bars and Combo points).
 • When queuing for multiple specific battlegrounds, players can now enter and complete battlegrounds without losing their place in any queues for other battlegrounds. As soon as the player is invited to join a battleground, any other battleground queues are suspended until the player has completed the battleground or declined the invitation. However, the player's place in any other queues is maintained, which often means that upon completing a battleground the player will immediately be invited to join any other battlegrounds they were queueing for.
 • The countdown timer when announcing that a battleground/arena is about to begin now has a sound effect for the last 10 numbers.
 • Enemy targets with buffs you can dispel now have those buffs highlighted.
 • The queue in the Honor frame now displays the status of and lets you queue for Tol Barad and Wintergrasp while on every continent.
