“An alchemist is able to work miracles with ordinary herbs, converting them into stable potions that range in effect from healing to breathing underwater and everything in between.”
- — Daedal
Alchemists (also known as chemists) are potion masters who have chosen the path of alchemy as their profession. They take on the positions of vendors, trainers, apprentices, and masters. Alchemists use herbs to create strange, magical brews that heal, empower, and produce a variety of positive effects - invisibility, elemental resistance, mana restoration, and much more. They can also transmute mystic materials into rare and exotic new forms. With their power to create valuable consumables, alchemists are highly useful to adventurers. By creating rare materials, alchemists can make a great deal of money, enable the creation of powerful weapons and armor, and even influence the economy of Azeroth.[1]
Among the specialties they can dedicate themselves to, they can become masters of potions,[2] masters of elixirs,[3] or masters of transmutation.[4]
Characteristics[]
Any alchemist will tell that matter is malleable, any substance can be transformed into another - but nothing is really created or destroyed.[5] As transmuters,[6] they use alchemist stones of various qualities,[7] and can learn to overcome all these limitations.[5] In their work, they mix potions, elixirs, flasks, mana oils or wizard oils, and other alchemical substances into vials using herbs and other reagents. Their concoctions can restore health and mana, poison and paralyze, make invisible, enhance attributes, or provide any number of other useful effects. High level alchemists can also transmute essences and metals into other essences and metals. Their most numerous and prized requests concern the concoction of mana potions in times of conflict.[8][9]
It is important for an alchemist to take great care in their trade.[10] Patience and precision are important for an alchemist, as even slight alterations to a potion's ingredients can change it fundamentally.[11] They are used to gathering foul substances safely, and in time, are used to the smell.[12] One trained in alchemy is able to sense the magical potential from the resources they use.[13] Illidan Stormrage has long practice in alchemy, which lets him identify individual components in alchemical mixtures.[14]
Some alchemists can craft an extract that will induce a vision.[15] For an alchemist, the creation of a truth serum is tricky business, demanding keen instincts, perfect timing, and improvisation at every step.[16] Plants have properties that allow alchemists to re-energize and reinvigorate others through potions.[17] The Deathrose is a rare flower that grows only in the deepest, darkest swamps of Ashenvale, and in the hands of a master alchemist, the petals of the flower can be used to create some of the deadliest poisons known to exist in all Azeroth.
All alchemists have their own alchemy station, it's a personal workbench they take care of, and for which they spend years assembling the materials and components necessary to work on.[18] Among their instruments, they notably use a burner or leyflame burner,[19] corks,[20] a mixing flask,[21] volatile reagents,[22] filters,[23] a crucible,[24] a calibrated burette assembly,[25] and a decoction conduit.[26]
Potion stains on their tabard and crushed herbs on their boots are one way to easily recognize an alchemist.[27] All the stirring during their labors makes their arms strong.[28]
Background[]
This section is a lore stub. |
Before the War of the Ancients, Beth'Amara was one of the Highborne's most influential alchemists, and she alone was said to have mastered transmuting metals among other things.[29]
The Dark Iron dwarf Urheld Darkstone, despite being an alchemist of great skill, was thought insane by his contemporaries and, hence, did not share his research.[30]
Walleye Sprysprocket was a famed alchemist who lived long ago. After he studied Sandstone Drakes in great detail, he developed potions to mimic the drakes' physiology.[31]
World of Warcraft[]
The Royal Apothecary Society is a Forsaken alchemical society created by Sylvanas Windrunner in order to create a new undead plague to wipe out the Scourge.[32] They are constantly brewing up new plagues and poisons to unleash upon Sylvanas' enemies, and the other races of the Horde once believed they were working on a remedy to cure their "illness".[33]
Wrath of the Lich King[]
During the war against the Lich King, Professor Putricide's blight was one of the Scourge's most powerful weapons. Consequently, Alchemist Adrianna of the Argent Crusade sent adventurers to obtain pure samples of the toxins, in order for their researchers and alchemists to concoct an antidote that would save countless lives.[34]
During the War Against the Nightmare, Stormwindian alchemists brew a potion that would help individuals sleep and keep immune against the Emerald Nightmare, which King Varian Wrynn took to protect himself.[35]
Cataclysm era[]
Prior to the Cataclysm, Thrall sent several Horde alchemists to Ashenvale to assist the night elves in looking over the slaughter' site, where many tauren and night elves druids of the Cenarion Circle have been murdered by the Twilight's Hammer, and also to examine the blood and clothing of which the Horde was accused.[36]
In Gilneas, Krennan Aranas the Royal Chemist and Belysra Starbreeze collaborated to create a serum to help Genn Greymane keep his worgen affliction controlled and secret.[37] It was later used on bitten Gilneans to fight the Forsaken during the invasion of Gilneas.[38] At Raven Hill in Duskwood, Oliver Harris also worked on a way to restore the mind and sanity of the feral worgen, and through alchemy, he managed to cure Sven Yorgen from his madness.[39]
When Ironforge fell under the control of the Dark Iron dwarves, a dwarven priestess and alchemist gave Prince Anduin Wrynn an invisibility potion to flee Queen-Regent Moira Thaurissan.[40] At the request of Kurdran Wildhammer, alchemists later came to check the sickly state of Sky'ree and confirmed that she was old instead of ill.[41]
Mists of Pandaria[]
In order to fight the mantid, the Shado-Pan alchemists created gas bombs for their agents, sowing chaos and delaying their actions for days anywhere that they set them off.[42]
Warlords of Draenor[]
On alternate Draenor, alchemists have been known to show an interest in digging up gronnling bones for research purposes.[43]
Legion[]
As potent alchemy can be used to prevent insects from infesting fields of farmlands, the drogbar used to trade bug sprayers to the Highmountain tauren of the Rivermane tribe.[44]
During the campaign on Argus, a few alchemists traveled to Krokul Hovel, carrying with them fel-tainted alchemist stones. Alchemist Funen later helped them to purify the stones and elevate the power within.[45]
Dragonflight[]
The Artisan's Consortium is a company that provides goods and services to crafters and gatherers in need across Azeroth.[46] They have a vast network of artisans and gatherers of all professions, notably alchemists, that can craft and obtain the highest quality goods,[47] and their business connects those artisans and gatherers to the customers.[48]

Goblin alchemist[]
- Main article: Goblin alchemist
Due to the influence of the kaja'mite, goblins became excelent alchemists.[53] These maniacal and brilliant alchemists are masters of volatile chemicals, explosives, and strange mechanical devices.[54] Some of them were seen as allies of the Old Horde during the Second War, as well as allies of the New Horde in the aftermath of the Third War. In Kalimdor, the city of Gadgetzan and capital of the Steamwheedle Cartel is home to goblinhood's finest alchemists.[55]

In the RPG[]
Many are those who know how to create the simplest items in the alchemist's repertoire — small sticks with bits of alchemical gold that glow brighter than a torch when struck, vicious acids, and stones coated with a special dust that causes a loud explosion when struck against something solid. But these are only the basics of an elaborate and incredible art, easily as expansive as any form of spellcasting. Indeed, the simple alchemist's fire and thunderstones are to the heights of alchemy what little cantrips are to the greatest forms of magic.
Many alchemists — at least, many alchemists who are also spellcasters — often find themselves drawn away to the “superior” art of potion-brewing. However, not all alchemists have that option. More than one skilled alchemist can cast no spells whatsoever, and many are the warriors among both the Forsaken and night elves who supplement their deadly skills with the heights of alchemical knowledge.[56]
Mechanical devices and steam technology are the latest attraction, leaving alchemy as "the old technology". Alchemists resent the disparaging tone that accompanies "old".[57]
One can also become an arcane alchemist, consulting old books and performing lengthy mathematical calculations to achieve similar results than the troll witch doctors.[58] Potion docs work differently than basic alchemist, as they tool brewing and alchemy to a different level, operating in a different way than a basic alchemist or witch doctor, and combining science and magic in their unique art.[59]
Notes[]
- Noggle Ficklespragg makes a living gathering rare herbs for Cenarion Hold alchemists.[60]
- The room of Huglar and Hugarin contained alchemic devices,[61] implying they were alchemists.
- According to Magister Garuhod cocktail mixing is alchemy, and as everyone knows, alchemy is magic.[62]
- According to Apprentice Pestlepot, there are no finer alchemists in all of Azeroth than the Pestlepots.
- It was originally said that goblin alchemists adhered plates of adamantine steel to Deathwing,[63] but that story was later changed.
