A subterranean being matrix is one of the synthesis matrices that Titans use when seeding a world. Each synthesis matrix is used to achieve the Titans' goals. For Azeroth, a subterranean being matrix was modified to create a being with increased durability with an affinity for deep region shaping; the earthen are the product of this modification. Typically, the Titans apparently use a "biomass construction foundation" in a subterranean being matrix, likely meaning flesh, but the description does not discount the use of plant-life for these matrices. Through study and research of Azeroth's planetary crust, the Titans discovered that Azeroth has a resilient composition. They then theorized that if they used a cross-section of the crust as the foundation, they could create a subterranean being that would epitomize the resiliency of the planet's essence. Thus, they used a blend of Azeroth's various stone core compounds to create a being that satisfied the design parameters they had set out. The new race was appropriately named "Earthen".

After the earthen had been put into service by the "Creators", unforeseen anomalies were discovered which affected their synthesis matrix due to high-stress environments.^[1] The first series of experiments resulted in troggs and the Series Two experiments resulted in dwarves.^[2] Further experiments conducted in Ulduar resulted in earthen that were immune to whatever was causing the Curse of Flesh.^[3]

A cross-section of Azeroth's crust was used as the foundation for the Earthen's synthesis rather than the typical biomass construction foundation used by the Creators. Research on the world's composition led the Creators to theorize that an enhanced being could be synthesized that would epitomize the resiliency of this world's essence.
